Hubble Sees Galaxies Spiraling around Leo - From Goddard Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/nbxsKE
Shown here is a spiral galaxy known as NGC 3455, which lies some 65 million light-years away from us in the constellation of Leo (the Lion).

Galaxies are classified into different types according to their structure and appearance. This classification system is known as the Hubble Sequence, named after its creator Edwin Hubble.
In this image released 14, April, 2014, NGC 3455 is known as a type SB galaxy — a barred spiral. Barred spiral galaxies account for approximately two thirds of all spirals. Galaxies of this type appear to have a bar of stars slicing through the bulge of stars at their center. The SB classification is further sub-divided by the appearance of a galaxy's pinwheeling spiral arms; SBa types have more tightly wound arms, whereas SBc types have looser ones. SBb types, such as NGC 3455, lie in between.

NGC 3455 is part of a pair of galaxies — its partner, NGC 3454, lies out of frame. This cosmic duo belong to a group known as the NGC 3370 group, which is in turn one of the Leo II groups, a large collection of galaxies scattered some 30 million light-years to the right of the Virgo cluster.

Witness baby stars at every stage of their lives! 🌟 This stunning new view from the James Webb Space Telescope shows everything from early stellar embryos and protoplanetary discs to fully-formed stars inside the OMC-2 molecular cloud. #Space #NASA #Webb 1/4
For this NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope Picture of the Month we return to the constellation Orion (the Hunter), a location familiar to Webb. This area of the sky is replete with star-forming clouds that make up a complex hundreds of light-years across. We find ourselves in the giant molecular cloud Orion A, of which the familiar Orion Nebula (also known as M42) is just a part; Webb has taken both close-up and wide-angle looks at M42 before.

Jupiter From Below (Enhanced Color) - From NASA Marshall Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/RM55b7
This enhanced-color image of Jupiter’s south pole and its swirling atmosphere was created by citizen scientist Roman Tkachenko using data from the JunoCam imager on NASA’s Juno spacecraft.

Juno acquired the image, looking directly at the Jovian south pole, on February 2, 2017, at 6:06 a.m. PST (9:06 a.m. EST) from an altitude of about 63,400 miles (102,100 kilometers) above Jupiter's cloud tops. Cyclones swirl around the south pole, and white oval storms can be seen near the limb -- the apparent edge of the planet.

JPL manages the Juno mission for the principal investigator, Scott Bolton, of Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio. Juno is part of NASA's New Frontiers Program, which is managed at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Denver, built the spacecraft. Caltech in Pasadena, California, manages JPL for NASA.

Gemini North image of Arp 78, also known as NGC 772. Interactions with its companion galaxy NGC 770 (out of frame) left NGC 772's bottom arm elongated and asymmetrical. Credit: International Gemini Observatory, NOIRLab, NSF, AURA Source
A large, nearly face-on spiral galaxy fills most of the frame. Appearing somewhat like an aerial view of a hurricane, the galaxy's spiral arms swirl around a bright yellow-white center. The curling arms are defined by dark brown dust lanes and are dotted with blue stars. While the arms in the upper portion of the galaxy are somewhat poorly defined, in the bottom of the galaxy, one overdeveloped spiral arm curves counter-clockwise from about 3 o'clock to about 8 o'clock. The inner edge of this arm features a line of blue dots, which are star clusters. The outer edge of this arm is traced by filamentary dust lanes. Since this arm flattens out near its end, in contrast to the rounder upper arms, the overall shape of the galaxy resembles a paisley. The black background of space can be seen in the upper left and lower right corners of the image, filled with numerous tiny background galaxies and a few foreground stars.
