It's weirdly bittersweet to realize this. I mean, I knew it academically and I was expecting it, but experiencing it still threw me off a bit more then I expected because I still had those amazing memories in the early 2000s of playing that game and truly unlocking everything.

Now I am all for getting my old school boots on and re-playing an older game in its messy, hasn't-aged-well glory, and I still like Dynasty Warriors 3. However, what I once had for that game is gone because things are different.

My life is different, what's more the Dynasty Warriors series and the greater subgenre of games has gotten much better since 2001 (DW9 notwithstanding). It's still a good game, but I can't help but to compare it to Dynasty Warriors 8, despite the latter coming out 11 years later.

In some ways it's definitely one of those "you can never go home again" moments. Dynasty Warriors 3 meant a lot to me when I was in my early 20s.. It was a huge special interest that with my found family at the time I truly 100%-ed. But things are different now.

Played Dynasty Warriors 3 remastered. While there are several good QOL improvements, it felt a lot like replaying GTA 3. It was definitely good for its time, but the series and greater genre has improved so much it's hard to go back.

Compare that to previous generations where huge swaths of their library may never see the light of day without such efforts, including some amazing hidden gems (i.e. Karita: The Word of Fate). It's a major difference of scale.

Since ports of previous titles are covered under those generations (unless improved upon), the only other thing I can think of is the ~50 exclusives (i.e. Gravity Rush 2) and the Vanillaware games. That's it.

This was also around the time that PC ports started getting actually half-decent, so you can't claim a situation like with Deadly Premonition where the PC port essentially doesn't count because it's too damn broken and the publisher can't be asked to fix it.

The big part of emulation is the preservation of game media (something the industry seems violently allergic to). It honestly makes me wonder that, outside Nintedo, how much would be "necessary" PS4/XB1 and onward to specifically emulate given that the majority of the titles were PC-ported.
