After about a week, the pickled watermelon rinds ARE very pickly! I left the outer skin on because I like it but lots of folks shave off the toughest outer layer. I treated them like fridge dill pickles, and there’s a mix of brines, thicknesses, and blanching. Def gonna do this with rinds again!

Just finished @nenrich.bsky.social’s “Into the Wood Chipper” about the rapid dismantling of USAID and it was HARROWING. You really get a sense of how quickly it happened and confused and traumatized our civil service was. There’s so much blood on our hands as a country, and this was so needless.

Current things fridge pickling: red onion, garlic, and carrots. Most of these have dill and habanero but the carrots have tumeric and ginger. On the lacto ferms, there’s sauerkraut, red onion, garlic (can’t wait for it to turn blue!), carrots, and ginger with chilis from my indoor pepper plant.

8 glass jars and one large crock. Glass jars are filled with carrots, garlic, sliced red onion, sliced ginger. Some jars are being pickled and have regular jar lids. Some are being fermented and have plastic bags filled with dry blacks beans being used as a weight to keep the veggies below the brine. The sauerkraut crock is covered with a kitchen towel

Hot tip: have bulky or heavy cream or paste products you don’t want to deal with for short trips? Get a pack of 1-oz jars and just depot what you’ll use in a couple days! The jars can be cleaned and reused.

Periodic tip that an angled eye brush can be your best friend if you’re learning to apply eyeliner—especially with wings—or just want to use any eyeshadow as an eyeliner!! Can also be used with gel pot, cake, or pencil eyeliner (either picking up direct from the pencil or smudging after application)

Trying historical makeup methods! Today’s was burning the tip of a clove to use the soot as an eyebrow pencil! You can tell which brow I filled in and which was left plain. Soft look, matched my brow color Pro tip: before you’re about to shower or wash your face is a great time to practice makeup!
