This is really well explained, thank you! Learned a lot of new stuff from this. Cycle stealing is really interesting, never knew the audio was implemented like this. I wonder how measurable the quality change is.

yeah, I had to get a few brush packs, the defaults aren't great the brush engines are powerful! just wish it had more nicer defaults (Blender has been making good progress in this area, at least)

you can always just modify the record directly it can be completely empty, entirely whitespace, I think control characters also work (but get sanitized when displayed on bsky) also, various checkmark chars/emoji are removed from it when displayed (there are like 3 or 4, including ✅ and ✓)

Yeah I just did `args().next()`, so my RISC-V emulator was trying to load *itself* for execution (very much not a RISC-V binary nor 32-bit). The latter explains the weird address ranges too. I kinda, just, completely forgot. Anyway it now loops infinitely (as it should), which is a huge win.

I spent several hours confused why it was trying to load data at address 0x140000000, a 64-bit address, on a 32-bit emulator. I thought I had gotten something wrong about the ELF format, so I kept searching around. Hey did you know that arg[0] is *not* the first argument, but the executable itself?

Spent all night debugging my RISC-V emulator. I got a simple Rust program to build for the riscv target, and so I wanted to try to load it in the emulator. I made the emulator take one CLI argument as a file path to load the binary from, copied my built riscv binary over, but...

For the use case that you probably have in mind - a backend meant for a specific community - I think the cheapest approach is to mirror Bluesky's (or Blacksky's, etc.) existing moderation decisions, and overrule specific actions on a case-by-case basis.
121
Metaflame @metaflame.dev · 25/09/2026
I think that any reasonable alternate Bluesky backend will have to handle moderation for the whole network, too. An unmoderated full view of the network will quickly fill up with spam, so at the very least it would have to intake Bluesky-the-company's moderation labeler.
122
Metaflame @metaflame.dev · 25/09/2026
Furrylist basically implements the allow-list thing via custom feeds - they verify you manually, and that then includes you in their feeds (a mini-view of the network within the context of an appview, when you think about it).
121
Metaflame @metaflame.dev · 25/09/2026
I guess that's the closest you could get to a fedi-like experience? You'd still keep the benefits of atproto like account portability. Honestly though, it would feel kinda clunky, like an island within Bluesky. Private spaces & communities probably address this better.
110
Metaflame @metaflame.dev · 25/09/2026
You could have multiple such allow-lists (or backends), all of which would be shared by the involved parties - that basically emulates what instance federation does. The allow-lists would form the basis of what the backends are even aware of, and other accounts wouldn't even exist for them.
110
Metaflame @metaflame.dev · 25/09/2026
Fedi is basically a whole bunch of allow-lists when we consider instances where you need to sign up and get accepted. Bringing this as a hypothetical to atproto land: you'd have to "sign up" for the custom backend to be added to its allow-list, at which point it would begin indexing you.
110
Metaflame @metaflame.dev · 25/09/2026
On fedi, admins can block an instance to quickly block a group of users based on where they signed up, but that obviously has collateral damage if some people there want to interact. On atproto it makes even less sense, because a user's repo can float freely between PDSes anyway.
120
Metaflame @metaflame.dev · 25/09/2026
Yea, and the moment you start including mutuals in the backend's index, or accounts that allow-listed users follow or interact with... it increases the need for (and so cost of) moderation. Even if we assume that liability is not an issue, you'll want to guard against undesirable bots and spam.
120
Metaflame @metaflame.dev · 24/09/2026
A backend with an allow-list of DIDs amounts to a blanket appview-level ban on everyone not on the allow-list. But is that what users would be looking for?
120
Metaflame @metaflame.dev · 24/09/2026
My understanding is that the backend is the inexpensive part. CDN hosting needs a lot more bandwidth, but moderation is by far the most expensive part for a world-scale network like Bluesky.
131
Metaflame @metaflame.dev · 24/09/2026
The issue is, what kind of user experience would the goal of it be? If it runs on an allow-list of DIDs, it makes moderation way easier, but becomes incredibly restrictive. But as soon as you start broadening the scope, moderation becomes more and more expensive.
130
Metaflame @metaflame.dev · 24/09/2026
The backend itself should not be particularly costly to host. The initial backfill is harder, but with the newer sync method that can be done progressively at runtime. Plus, on-demand backlink stuff can be handled using constellation services.
