Per Willingham’s research on critical thinking, expertise in one domain doesn’t automatically translate into expertise in other domains.

Here’s my off-the-cuff hypothesis of the day, inspired by Norbert Elias. In his book on the Civilizing Process, Elias makes one of those cool, sweeping, blow-your-mind historial claims:

The name of the game in politics is “authenticity.” Why? Because politicians are generally reviled, thought of as fake, dishonest, untrustworthy, and self-interested. Any time anyone comes across as something other than that, it’s a win.

“The history of the United States has, in many ways, been the history of the tension between equality and excellence. The history of the legal profession-and inevitably of the law schools-has similarly reflected the clash between elitism and democracy” (Stevens 1983:xiii).

Americans have lost trust… the drop is precipitous… but it’s not in the institutions you think; not in the ones that have made many headlines recently. They’ve lost trust in Congress, the Supreme Court, and politicians in general.

The drop in international students at several prestigious universities (not just small ones) is brutal and completely disheartening. :-( The lost jobs, the lost talent, the lost knowledge, the lost institutions, the lost openness to the world, the lost diversity, it's all brutal.

Here’s an interesting argument I heard recently. If you go down the path of alternative grading methods, such that students can no longer differentiate themselves from their peers by their grades (rampant grade inflation does the same thing),
