The Witches of Worm by Zilpha Keatley Snyder

I reread this as an adult and it was very clear that the cat is not evil, as the little girl thinks. She is in an abusive home as it projecting her anger onto the cat. So, TW for both child and pet abuse

Witch Week by Diana Wynne Jones is set in an alternate world where being a witch is illegal. The characters are all orphans at a special boarding school for children whose parents have been burnt at the stake. They are constantly watched for signs of deviance. They all know they could be put to death next. So even though the tone of the narrative is pretty light and humorous the children are suffering some pretty serious emotional damage and are often awful to each other. Also there's some self harm, for instance a kid holding his hand in a candle flame to remind himself not to mess up and do magic.

October Book Recs Day 2 Another one that's good for stretching out over the course of the month is this collection of poems by Eve Merriam. This is also a #bannedbook if you're into those. Another frequently-challenged spooky book I enjoyed as a kid is The Headless Cupid by Zilpha Keatley Snyder.

I'm going to try to rec a spooky book or two for every day of October. Day 1 rec BECAUSE THERE'S A CHAPTER FOR EVERY DAY OF THE MONTH is Roger Zelazny's A NIGHT IN THE LONESOME OCTOBER. Full of classic horror allusions, told from the POV of Jack the Ripper's dog. Alt kid rec: Bunnicula

In the Dark Heart of Winter is a sapphic gothic by Mere Rain. This is the most horror-leaning book and has murders and secrets and hidden passages. There's no sexual content, just yearning, but it's plot-important. They're too busy with the horrors rn, that's all.

Secrets of Love and Time by Mere Rain. Short supernatural mystery set in 1900 London. No on-page sex. For a genius detective Maine is awfully slow to realize he's in love with his best (only) friend.

Dark Arts for Bright Hearts by Mere Rain. Soft-hearted goth boys get cursed while clubbing. It's not their fault, but they have to figure out how to cope. A bit of sexual content, but it's more horny vibes and bad magic.

Princes at War by Mere Rain. Second world fantasy with princes from enemy kingdoms lost in the woods and trying to figure out who is sabotaging the planned alliance. Some explicit sex scenes, but not so many they're hard to skip.
