Happy retirement, Lonnie! So glad we met at ICOM 2019 in Kyoto, and his book "A Fool's Errand" was a huge help to me as the director of the National Deaf Life Museum. I dream of growing up to be as cool as Lonnie Bunch, and I hope when I retire I leave behind as stellar a legacy as he does.

Oh, and @jessiegender.bsky.social missed one. We also had this on the schedule. The same four people also presented eight other panels about various SFF properties (Avatar, Agents of Shield, etc). The descriptions are fairly benign but 12 panels with the same foursome does strike me as odd. ...
Panel info. "MEGA! Make Earth Great Again! President Clark, anyone? Let's discuss the shocking parallels between the rise and reign of Babylon 5's Earth President Clark and our current political quagmire. Andrew Kelley, Beverly Stark, Lawrence A. Neals, Mark Richmond"

I'm spending the weekend at @awesomecon.bsky.social wrangling 17 ASL interpreters, as usual - but representing @dublin2029.bsky.social while I do it! Oh, and these are my new glasses - it was hard to switch styles, but I like them. 😊

I thought I might have one more trip before the end of the year, but I think this is it. 36 flights is the most I've ever taken in a year, so I don't suppose I needed another, really. I have eight booked for 2026, with more to come. Up, up, and away... ✈️

Some pictures from my travels! I should've shared more while en route, but such is life. At least I can share one selfie per country. 1. On the Cutty Sark in London (7/27) 2. At the Jardin Luxembourg (8/4) 3. Inside Ghent's city hall (8/6) 4. Ready for the Hugos in Seattle (8/16)

I got a season pass so I can go again with friends, but if this is my last time at Six Flags America, I enjoyed it solo. I walked right onto every ride I wanted, make the swings my first stop as always, and saw the remains of the oldest ride I remember since I started coming nearly 40 years ago.
Meredith, a white person in sunglasses and a Gallaudet T-shirt, poses in front of the exit to Six Flags America, under a sign with the park's name. A green and purple steel roller coaster with many tangles. A low, flat swings ride with rainbow under its roof. A dilapidated walkway around an overgrown grassy area. An exit sign warns of panthers.

The best part of being the interpreter scheduler for an event is I get to assign them to myself sometimes. So I got to see @seananmcguire.bsky.social and @scalzi.com anyway, even though I had to leave early because (as expected) a separate interpreter crisis popped up.

Today has been challenging, and I am finding joy tonight in the fact that less than a month from now, I will have a delicious bowl of vegan sesame tantanmen at T's Tantan in Ueno for ¥1200 ($7.65). I will take my joy where I can get it. 😋

Here's all the parameters of ASL signs in a single image! (3/3)
Parameters of ASL Signs: When two signs seem the same, compare parameters to find the difference! Handshape, Location, Movement, Palm Orientation, and Facial Expression.

If you're studying ASL, I hope these are helpful for you, too. Remember - learn from deaf instructors whenever possible. (2/3)
Movement: The direction the hand moves when signing (or a lack of movement). For cat, it's away from the face.Palm Orientation: May be to the front, to the back, up or down, left or right, etc. For cat, it's toward the person watching you.Facial Expression: Also called "non-manual" markers or signals. Can include mouth shapes, eyebrows, and more. (Not all signs use them.) For cat, there isn't one.

Understanding how American Sign Language signs can be differentiated is a huge help when you're just starting out learning the language! I created these graphics for a friend who's taking their first ASL class - each image references the sign for "cat." (1/3)
Parameters of ASL Signs: When two signs seem to be the same, compare parameters to find the difference!Handshape: There are about 40 common handshapes in ASL. For cat, it's the thumb and pointer making a circle, and the other three fingers extended.Location: Where on the body the hand is positioned. For cat, it's on the cheek.

Hearing people shenanigans: buckle in, it's a long one. A hearing woman, Jessica Wohlstetter, who is not a certified interpreter, developed a curriculum to teach ASL at the NYPD Academy. She claims that after 11 class sessions, you can take the RID certification exam. (Again, she has not passed it.)
Schedule for NYPD ASL Interpreter Certification Pathway says you can "become an ASL certified member of service."

Next to the heading is a graphic of the ASL alphabet, but T is completely wrong and several other letters are a bit odd.

Schedule is February 29, Overview of RID Certification Process. March 4 and 6, theory and practice of interpreting. March 11 and 13, Interpreting 1, ASL to English. March 25 and 27, ASL for emergency situations. April 1 and 3, Interpreting 2, English to ASL. April 8 and 10, RID test preparation.

I have now been to the Acropolis Museum and the British Museum. 100% confirmed my pre-existing opinion that the Parthenon Marbles should go back to Greece. Not least because they barely acknowledge the controversy, as seen here. At least they're calling them Parthenon instead of Elgin now.

Pictures from my research trip to Ottawa this past weekend. I want to go back sometime when it is not so cold, because there was so much more I would've liked to do, had it not been so absolutely freezing (to my mid-Atlantic self). See alt text for image descriptions along with extra captions!

I am teaching about graphic design this week, discussing art styles. I'm focusing on whether generative AI can eliminate the job of graphic designers, and I asked an AI to create a cat in the style of the De Stijl movement. Admittedly I'm partial to De Stijl, but I really like what it came up with.
A line art image of a cat, backed by squares and shapes in a grid. The colors red, yellow, and blue are prominent, with black, white and gray as well. It echoes this particular art style very well, albeit with curves and other non-grid shapes to make up the cat.
