Yeaaaa it's kind of the curse of being into ASOIAF. Only fantasy that handle queer characters with more respect than some queer authors do and the show cut em or killed em. And now the series is probably never finishing so we'll never know their fates unless he's waiting to publish em posthumously

The ASOIAF books are great too if the awful Game of Thrones show hasn't ruined your opinion of it already like it did a bunch of people (myself included until I read em) Sci-Fi wise Moorcock also touches on that as do Norman and CJ Cherryh. I'd say the Xeelee series but god that's a brain breaker

90% of modern fantasy and sci-fi has ties to Michael Moorcock's Elric Saga. It's in Warhammer. The Witcher was based off it. If you've seen a white haired man with a cursed black sword they stole it from him. Glen Cook, Andre Norton, Le Guin and Lisanne Norman are good too.

Dude i'm gonna be fully honest. I've dived into excerpts. It's just not for me. Same as Ready Player One. Same as most modern "I only know fantasy from games and D&D" fantasy books. I see no value in reading something that looks identical in depth and quality to fanfics I read in high school.

I think you need to read some actual fantasy that touches on deep themes if you think that shit is deep, respectfully. That reads like a book aimed at teenagers, not a fantasy novel aimed at adults. Reeks of escapism, placating the reader and an author who thinks he's smarter than he is.

May not be insincere but that's awful. If I wanted bad therapyspeak about masking i'd go hit up Ao3 and read an equally poorly written fanfiction. Same issue I have with Sanderson. Genuinely reads as patronising like the author is talking to a child. If that's the state of modern fantasy no thanks.
