Fingers crossed for dry weather today! I’m leading a walking group around Holden Park in Oakworth for the Keighley Walking Festival. I’ll be talking about Sir Isaac Holden’s life, Lucifer matches, the square motion comb and how his estate became our local park in 1927.
Oakworth House in Oakworth, West Yorkshire. A large Italianate building of two floors with a large central tower and chimneys for boilers houses. This has a lake in front with formal gardens, shrubs and trees around it. To the right is a large Methodist Chapel building.A map of the Oakworth House estate showing the mansion and winter gardens and several ancillary buildings such as vineries, tomato and peach houses, and cold frames. This is now the location of Holden Park in West Yorkshire.

Sitting out with the chimenea going, bottle lights and candles lit and a nice bottle of beer. Down in the Worth Halley I can hear the steam train chugging up the railway line to Haworth. Lovely evening.
A row of multi coloured painted glass bottles lit by led lights, candles on a table and a real fire going in a cast iron chiminea. Looks very cosy!

My family were farmers and had several evacuees at any one time. My grandfather welcomed their mums to come and stay on the farm whenever they wished. He also ensured that the women went home with some fresh produce. I believe some stayed in contact after the war.
