Melkor333, Linux, packaging. We SHOULD be angry. The system IS broken! But the real fucking assholes aren't refugees or someone missing his appointment with the employment office. The real assholes are the fucking overrich neoliberal narcists.

This summarizes my feels today regarding the #Radicle disclosure. For no legitimate reason I've been having a sense of guilt and escapism since the vuln is public. I couldn't put my finger on it. Now I know it's because I feel for the devs. Member changes, short on hands, hard work. Then this.

Shells. Terminals. I use them *heavily* but it's just stuck in the 90ies. Yes it's better than using a crappy gui BUT THIS IS NO EXCUSE FOR NOT FIXING ALL THE CRAP ALL THE SHELLS COME WITH AND NOT IMPROVING THE EXPERIENCE It's ridiculous that Ghostty had to somehow come up with *debugging features*

OMG YES! IMO the one think to make it actually recommendable! I found 2 repos for yosemitesam.ch (the first is probably my first try where I accidentally `rm -rf`'d the radicle folder). I think it certainly makes sense to have the latest commit date and maybe commit count?

More on positioning: The value is not: - “It’s a decentralised protocol” The value is: - “Here is an ecosystem that plays well together” - “You only need one account” - “You won’t lose your data / history”

Certain models of Lenovo laptops now ship with Fedora and Ubuntu Linux. This is done to keep costs low and cater to developers or IT professionals who heavily rely on Linux. Another reason could be the increased unpopularity of Windows 11, but that is just my own wild guess. Would you buy it?
Certain models of Lenovo laptops now ship with Fedora and Ubuntu Linux OS. You can still chose Windows 11 if you want. But, this good for folks working IT industry.

GitHub deplatforming? 6 month ago we asked developers if they see their dependency on GitHub as a risk. Except for some web3 projects and DRM related work, nobody seemed to care. Today we see large movement towards more open and non-US alternatives. #radicle #decentralized #git #opensource

Honestly I don't even know which systems actually ships bourne on `/bin/sh` by default! It's typically softlinked to bash/ksh which just execute in POSIX mode. Or it's dash/busybox ash.

You're right, AUR is probably the worst. There's at least: - amount of testing - source or also binaries? - amount of supported architectures

The list looks a bit different when you also include freshness (and ignore non-unique packages). Nix is absolutely crazy!

Sam @melkor333.bsky.social · 24/02/2025
Nix is not the only repo to do that. You'll find pypi packages almost everywhere. The very fastpaced npm packages usually don't get packaged because you need to be *extremely* efficient to stay even remotely up to date. It's a showcase for how smart the nix concept is that stuff like that work

Donald Trump illegally fired 19 inspectors general. The law requires notice to Congress and a case-by-case justification. It is not optional. Congress must convene a bipartisan hearing to examine these unlawful acts and how they can be remedied. Immediately.

One of these days we're gonna have to reckon with the fact that "money that I spend which does not directly benefit me is a waste" is a popular sentiment. I think we should state plainly that this is selfish on its face. And stupid when you have awareness which extends beyond your nose.
