In announcing her decision, U.S. District Judge April Perry quoted both Spider-Man and the 7th Circuit. 7th Circuit: "The greater the power that defies the law, the less tolerant the court can be of defiance." Spider-Man: "With great power comes great responsibility."

Becca Good spoke publicly: ”I'm devastated by how many other lives have been destroyed, in this the darkest of times. From so many families dealing with the loss of their owned loved ones, to everyone who has to witness it, the pain of this moment extends so far beyond our family." (cont)

it’s good to remind people today we aren’t going to trauma-inform our way to “more humane” forms of caging and execution

whenever we get close to seeing a systemic problem with policing, media rushes to frame it as a training problem. however, police culture is at the core of its mistreatment of victims and rape cases. policing is a tool of white supremacy AND *male* supremacy

Press release I woke up to, on Christa Pike’s condition (sent 9/30 at 11:36pm ET)
Statement from Christa Pike’s attorney Randy Spivey and Kelly Gleason from the TN Office of the Post Conviction Defender, and Stephen Ferrell and Luke Ihnen from Federal Defender Services of Eastern Tennessee

Tonight the State of Tennessee once again failed to carry out a lawful execution. We take no pleasure in being right, but the concerns raised by Ms. Pike proved to be true: difficult vein access, blown veins, degraded pentobarbital, no emergency medical care available when things inevitably go wrong, all under a protocol that remains veiled in secrecy.

Christa is being treated at a nearby hospital. We have not been informed as to her condition.

Struggling with this when even leftists are offering “ending impunity” as a remedy to fascism without acknowledging that what they’re proposing means more punishment, without even describing how more punishment would work

The tortuous, botched execution of Christa Pike is truly horrifying. And while it feels unique in some ways, in reality it is also only the latest in a history of botched executions going back years — YEARS — in numerous states. Please know: this is the reality of the death penalty in this country.

i am having trouble articulating this but a system that excuses gang rape as a youthful error on behalf of college men with ~ bright futures ~ does so because it is served by producing older men who are comfortable with, even enthusiastic about, torturing people at the system's behest

I’m not sure why her initial statement made it to his office, but I completely believe they would decline to bring charges if they thought it wouldn’t be a clear win (which is gross, typical, and also does not mean they couldn’t clear the low bar for criminal conduct to get a grand jury to indict)

Some legal details here worth highlighting, such as, we are still waiting on a grand jury. “The district attorney’s office will bring the case before a grand jury, he said, and upon indictment it ‘will prosecute the charges zealously and to the fullest extent of the law.’”

What about her future? What about how hard she worked to be there? What is to become of her life now? What process of justice could possibly right these wrongs? And how much more will she lose in the process of trying to get it? How much more of this are we all supposed to tolerate?

I’ve seen several stories of young women describing rape and sexual assault on college campuses in the last week which strikes me not as a rise in assaults but, given the violence of some of the examples, I fear we’re back in an era of headlines about group assaults, for the Tate/Clavicular era
