Nowadays we do get docs scanned to verify validity, either at e gate or manual, but the EU/EEA/CH lanes still move significantly quicker (about as fast as Global Entry from my experience, you just don't have to pay for it, and all citizens go there)

So an EU citizen's document check would literally be just a visual inspection to confirm it's real and the photo matched, vs. a much longer check for 3rd country nationals. So it made sense from an ops perspective not to mix, even though both then and now they can process citizens
