Bash can be a lifesaver! I had a problem with citations in Zotero. Whenever I added a citation to my paper, sometimes the references got corrupted. I had to correct them manually. Now, I get a corrected BibTeX file via this tiny Bash script. gist.github.com/mehmetgoktug... #bash #zotero #bibtex

R should probably use more Fortran! Around 23% of R’s core codebase is written in Fortran, and many packages still rely on it for numerical computing. Yet new development has increasingly shifted toward C++ and Rust. An interesting experimental repo: github.com/Beliavsky/Fo... #Rstats #Fortran

Sometimes I get confused about which assignment operator to use. Which one won't people judge me for? Yeah, the right-hand side is already wrong — what about the left? Should I protect S's inheritance, or just save a keystroke? Such a big question for me! :)

There is nothing impressive in learning modern Fortran. It has all the basic features a high level language has. I believe only its most basic features are needed to write an extension for R (those that are present since older versions). If you find C++ doable, you will definitely find Fortran too.

Josh Goldstein emailed me a nice tip for @rdatatable.bsky.social chaining: if we start a chained `data.table` operation inside a set of parens, we are no longer subject to the 'REPL constraint' and can keep each operation on a line. See ALT text. #rstats Now in the pdf at github.com/eddelbuettel...
Diff of a change the 'Getting Started in R - Tinyverse Edition' manuscript with a nice data.table improvement: inside a pair of ( ) we can place each chained operation on its own line improving readability.

I.e. we have

cw21 <- (  # use '(' to keep ops on separate lines
    cw[Time %in% c(0,21)]          # i: select rows
    [, weight := Weight]           # j: mutate
    [, Group := factor(Group)]
    [, .(Chick,Group,Time,weight)] # j: arrange
    [order(Chick,Time)]            # i: order
    [1:5]                          # i: subset
