Have you heard of a medieval black knight from the Arthurian world? Meet Moriaen, the protagonist from a Dutch chivalric romance by the same name, researched by Georgie Anderson, a PhD candidate from the University of Kent.

Spring Green? Saw some Bard there with the in-laws in the Before Time. Lovely evening, great acting, and a small child who happily played with a toy plane throughout. I sometimes wonder if that kid still remembers the plane.

Good morning. Thought you might like to know about Hawthorn trees and what their history is in #Ireland. If you look at the photo you will see the ancient wall was built to accommodate them, but why? These are about 300-350 years old. So much info in alt. #ForestFriday #photography #ECK
Hawthorn trees, known as a fairy tree or fairy thorn. It was believed to be a meeting place of the Aos Sí (the fairy people), and many farmers would never cut one down, even if it stood inconveniently in the middle of a field. Roads, fences, walls and even buildings have sometimes been altered to avoid disturbing these trees. It is considered extremely bad luck to cut one down. So they’re scattered all around. Untouched for centuries.

A cluster of ancient, wind-shaped hawthorn trees rises from the centre of a low dry-stone wall in an Irish meadow. The gnarled trunks twist and intertwine above weathered limestone rocks, while fresh green leaves emerge from the aged branches. Long grass ripples around the trees, and the softly blurred countryside beyond highlights their sculptural forms.

The dry-stone wall tells part of the trees’ story. Rather than cutting down the hawthorns, the wall builders carefully curved the wall around their trunks, incorporating them into the boundary instead of removing them. This was a practical decision—mature hawthorns formed strong natural barriers—but it also reflected a long-standing Irish tradition of respecting these trees. Hawthorns were often regarded as fairy trees, and many people believed disturbing them would bring misfortune. As a result, generations of stone masons patiently laid the limestone by hand around the living trunks, allowing both wall and trees to coexist. Today, the wall and hawthorns stand together as a living reminder of Ireland’s rural craftsmanship, folklore, and respect for the landscape.

A black and white yearbook photo of a young Black man with big wire-rimmed glasses, a neat mustache, and a very slight smile. Though he was 50ish when I met him and 71 when he passed, I know that smile well.

WHO DID THIS 🤣🤣💀
A very detailed LEGO sculpture of an old man sitting in a straight-backed chair, with his beard so long that it loops over his shoulder, around his arm, and on to the floor. This is based on a picture from the Guinness Book of World Records showing the man who held the record for longest beard (and to my knowledge the record has never been broken). His name was Hans Langseth, and his beard was over 17 feet in length, i.e., longer than some iterations of The Doctor's Scarf. Also he happens to be our 5yo's six-greats-grandfather.
