Footnotes in More Weight, a history of Salem. What a snapshot of this nation
The Salem Lyceum Hall was organized in 1830. Nathaniel Hawthorne was correspondence secretary there for the 1848-49 lecture series, although he himself never spoke there publicly. It is reported that the famous American statesman Daniel Webster (1782-1852), immortalized by Stephen Vincent Benét's 1936 short story, "The Devil and Daniel Webster," charged Hawthorne one hundred dollars to perform a lecture on the history of the United States Constitution. It was in this lecture hall that Alexander Graham Bell demonstrated the first long-distance telephone conversation on February 121877. Professor Bell sent a call to his assistant, Thomas A. Watson, who was
waiting in Boston, in the offices of the Boston Daily Globe. The "Fields" they are referring to is James T. Fields (1817-1881), the publisher, editor, and poet. Fields joined William Ticknor and became a junior partner in the publishing and bookselling firm famously known as Ticknor and Fields. Ticknor was the businessman, while Fields was the literary talent scout and promoter. Their publishing firm amassed an impressive list of authors, such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Henry David Thoreau, Horatio Alger, Lydia Maria Child, Charles Dickens, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Oliver Wendell Holmes, James Russell Lowell, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Alfred Tennyson, Mark Twain, and John Greenleaf Whittier. The Old Corner Bookstore in Boston was the headquarters of their publishing house, and a meeting place for these authors. It is now a Chipotle.

Some day, I should finally make a (poorly drawn) comic to tell the tale of working for the city of Oklahoma City and the roller coaster ride of being the underpaid employee who booked a church of Satan event in city-managed property.

I've lived in a few states it's never made sense to me why this city has so much street & sidewalk litter per capita. It's embarrassing to take visitors on a walk unless it's thru a privately maintained space 😮‍💨😔 Yes, we can all take a trash grabber and tidy up! But it returns a few days later!
