Today marks 150 years since the Beefeeters at the Tower Of London abandoned their ancient uniform of shoes painstakingly stitched from the hides of thousands of bumble bees for leather boots. Bee cobbling is now a lost art and all the original bee feet have long decayed away.

My aphids bring all the common yellowthroats to the yard!

A blurry yellow and gray bird with black markings that look like a bandit mask perched among honeysuckle branches. It's eating aphids, but they're too small to see so far away. A black circle obscures the rest of the view because I don't have a zoom lens and was took the picture through one side of my binoculars.

In my city there are volunteers who do this- stunned or injured birds are rehabbed/released, dead birds (from window strikes) go to the natural history museum.

Sauté a chopped onion & a few carrots in olive oil, add a tsp of curry powder and sauté a smidge more, then add a cup of dry split peas, 4 cups water, 1 tsp salt, and pinch cayenne. Simmer 45 minutes.

I'm sorry it sucks. Here's some trillium and early meadow rue for now.

Red trillium blooming in the morning sunshine. It's surrounded by early meadow rue, which is also blooming. This early meadow rue is male, so its flowers look like tiny chartreuse tassels.

Today while walking the dog we saw a pair of bald eagles at the top of a cottonwood tree in the park. My kids thought it was cool, but were calm b/c we see eagles several times a year- whereas during my childhood I never saw a single wild eagle.

I've never seen seed trays for sale either, but we poke holes in the bottom of the plastic trays grocery store mushrooms come in. They're smaller but sorta similar.
