Gilligans Island was an allegory for sinners dying and going to Hell. The characters represented the 7 deadly sins
Mrs Howell = sloth
Mr. Howell = greed
Ginger = Lust
Maryanne = Envy
Professor = Pride
Skipper = Gluttony & Wrath
Gilligan was actually Satan (dressed in red).
He was always foiling their plans to get off the island (keeping them in hell), pretending to be incompetent or foolish.
That's why it was called "Gilligan's Island".
