A possibly deceptive pattern at Alden Global Capital’s Denver Post is coming into focus: shift the cost of broken promises onto the public: cause consumers and the courts to handle their defective product claims and use city council to clean up their broken contracts. Consider the savings:👇

Just before Rocketboom launched in 2004, I saw something I’ll never be able to unsee: a group associated with Al Queda released the Nick Berg beheading video. He was on his knees in an orange jumpsuit in the desert. This kind of content previously had no outlet (TV would never). 👇

BREAKINGIST NEWS: I did not win my consumer protection appeal against Alden Global Capital. I am disappointed but feel the process in the courts has been fair. Because Heath Freeman & Randall Smith were dismissed w/o prejudice, I plan to improve my complaint & try again.🧵👇

Also, @masnick.com writes “Of course, my biases are known: I’m quite convinced that training AI on copyrighted works is fair use”. I agree but may not have as solid of a legal rationale. I see it plainly: after reading a book & absorbing that knowledge, I’m then free to use that knowledge.

New: A bombshell update in Alden Global Capital’s case against Microsoft & OpenAI you won’t find reported by The Denver Post because they only write for their owner’s side of the story: Lawyers for Alden basically manufactured the 3rd party research for showing how AI harmed them.

OpenAI Accuses Plaintiffs’ Lawyers Of Paying For, Hiding, And Then Laundering Sketchy Key Evidence In AI Copyright Case
A ton of attention was paid recently to some offhand statements from OpenAI and Microsoft employees that surfaced in filings in the NY Times' ongoing case against OpenAI, which has been consolidated into a much larger class action lawsuit. As I argued earlier, that struck me as something of a nothingburger of a story, because...

Does anyone think it’s interesting that @propublica.org hired a journalistic fraud for their Colorado state partnership & now won’t list who the editor was at ProPublica who worked on it? They explicitly note every Local Reporting Network collab has both a local editor & a ProPublica senior editor.

There’s something much worse. He went on to say he’s going to cheat “like they do” where he essentially describes that he’s come up with an actual justification for why he’s going to cheat. That makes this much worse, it’s not just a word slip.

It's a great time (major opportunity just waiting for the taking) for a quality group not associated with Corey Hutchins or The Denver Press Club to create a real journalism award program for Colorado. We don't have a real awards platform that is useful for consumers or the news industry here.
