Quite a few Japanese companies have had data hacks over the last week or so. AI is not going to help the situation. The government have already basically said: Protect your own data. So they’re being as helpful as always. www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/new...

It is an absolute disgrace that Fujitsu to this day haven’t compensated Post Office victims and their families. The company is now trying to push AI “business decision making” software. Frightening. global.fujitsu/en-global/pr...

Recently spent time with volunteers helping people affected by flooding in Chiba Prefecture. One of the things I love about my job is trying to highlight things you feel passionate about, or supporting people who you feel have done something remarkable.

I removed one post from the thread as it made it look like I was saying the government was doing a “work and go” policy. I meant to say they it LOOKS that way to me. It’s my opinion only.

That’s not what I meant, but I deleted it to avoid any misunderstanding.

As always, the rhetoric you see on Japanese social media does not totally fit with what you experience in your daily life. I still love living and working in Japan, and am not panicking or suddenly thinking the country hates me etc. But preparing for an upending is always important.

I’ve lived in Japan for 20 years now. I applied for permanent residence in February as I feltI was in a more secure position to do so because of my work and my children. Whether immigration will agree with that is another thing. It’s a case of wait and see.

A couple of people reached out to me about Japan’s changes to requirements for foreigners to renew their visas and to apply for permanent residency. I’m still unclear about a few things. For me, it may make it more difficult to continue living in Japan based on some of the requirements.

As well as the much-needed humour, the other reason I love getting Private Eye is even when international shipping causes it to be over 2 weeks late, the content is still very much relevant.

Sometimes you read a story and think, I hope all involved in the situation lose. One side saying they’re made to look like a complete arsehole. You don’t need what was published for that.

Japanese can be very difficult to translate when wanting to keep the nuance of the original material. So-called “catch copy” (think English slogans, like Nike’s Just Do It) are the most challenging at times. We always try to confirm with the original source when we can. Not always easy to, though.

Why should record donations to Reform worry us? Look at the US, where the 2010 Citizens United ruling opened the door to unlimited outside spending through super PACs, and elections now cost billions. ➡️ Watch Page 94, the Private Eye podcast: youtu.be/GqNXMniIPMQ

Essentially the translation software we use is AI. It’s always been there. It’s great for speeding up tasks. But computer have bugs. They make mistakes. And many companies don’t care.

I only hope the right people are eventually prosecuted. When reviewing the book I delved into a lot of the evidence laid out in the inquiry videos. The composure and dignity shown by the sub-postmasters is just incredible considering their suffering and the attitudes of those responsible.
