Finally found something i was hoping to find for a while: a half-decent reproduction of Fontworks New Cinema A, a name you might not know, but a font you saw before in a TON of Japanese games. Download here: web.archive.org/web/20160309... A bit different from the original, but similar enough

Someone needs to do a free clone of Fontworks' New Cinema AD. Intangible nerd heritage. One of those fonts nobody knows the name of, yet everyone recognizes.

The kanji in New Cinema give off just a hint of being handwritten, but do not draw too much attention to themselves on the big screen, where the typeface is traditionally used for subtitles. But sometimes, the odd word gotta be written in Latin characters. And what Latin characters! A charmingly wonky mess, cartoonesque forms threatening to close on themselves. So many video games use it! Like leaving in Japanese punctuation to tell you about the new 『KEY ITEM』 you received, is it a knowing aesthetic choice?

There's too many games that use this font I could post. Now that you know its name, you will see it everywhere. CW: Infohazard btw

I think an interesting variation is automation games, where the grind is to automate away the grind? I dunno, I found it funny today that, after spending 12 hours building a power plant (in a satisfactory hardcore mod), it was really satisfying to spend the next two going through and bugfixing.

It's such a good satire. One of my favs of 2025.

I'll always remember this as the movie I watched on Wikipedia.

Having worked in multiple engines, there's something to be said for the speed of source engine's iteration. Brush-based levels are crude, but can be modified far easily than opening up blender to make modifications. Hammer is such a powerful tool, it makes me wish I could use it in more places.

Playing Titanfall 2 again and it just fills you with sadness, that specific strain of narrative first person shooter that Half-life wrought basically does not exist any more in that same way. We barely get a confusing single player campaign stapled to a multiplayer game any more.

A chess position - the long and short of it is that black has castled and is up a lot of material, whereas white's king is exposed in the middle of the board with nothing. Black also has mate in one after black moved king to f4.

More detailed: White has a king on f4 (lmao), a queen on a4 a rook on a1, a bishop on c1, a knight on d2, and pawns on a2, b3, c4, e4, f3, and h2. Black has a king on g8, a queen on g1, rooks on a8 and f8, bishops on d7 and e7, knights on c6 and f6, pawns on a7, b7, c7, d6, f7, g7, and h7.
