It’s #MacroMonday and if you look closely you will see we have two #Nudibranch in this photo. This is Hypselodoris tyroni - and they can exhibit trailing behaviour where they follow each other very closely like a Choo Choo train. These are from the Philippines. #MarineLife #Invertebrates #SeaSlugs

A photo of two sea slugs (the other is behind the first one in the distance). The slug has a creamy white body with caramel markings across the back. It is also covered in black spots randomly across its back. It has a purple line around the base of the mantle.

Going through my North Carolina photos from '21. Here's another, a female Carolina Mantis (Stagmomantis carolina) cleaning her weaponry while perched on a pitcher plant. 🐙🌿📷 #insects

A closeup photo of a green mantis perched on the left side of a pitcher plant. The plant is white with a network of red and green veining. Only the front half of the mantis is visible, and her head is bent forward so she can groom one of her raptorial forelegs. The out of focus background behind her is orange and yellow.

Here is your Wednesday Weevil. This cool little beetle is, I think, a straight-snouted weevil in the family Brentidae. I like the two antennae-like projections at the tail end - it kinda makes the weevil look the same coming and going. 🌿🐙 #insects (Borneo)

A macro photo of a very slender, twig-like, black beetle on a green leaf, with out of focus green leaves in the background. The beetle is a straight-snouted weevil. It is seen from the side, facing right at an upward angle. It has long antennae held straight out, and two antennae-like projections from the rear of its body, so that unless you're very close, it's a bit hard to tell which is the front and which is the back.

A female parasitoid wasp laying eggs. Her preferred hosts are leaf roller moths. She lays her egg in the caterpillar and the wasp larva consumes the host. One interesting bit you can see here is that she keeps her ovipositor in a sheath. #WaspWednesday #Inverts (Sphelodon phoxopteridis) Pennsylvania

It's raining today in SoCal, but I hope to get out to the desert this weekend to look for these micro moths. They're the size of a rice grain and roost on sand. These pics from 2 years ago may be the first of live individuals since the late 80s. (Plumipalpiella martini; female left, male right).🐙🌿📷

Two features of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A show the power of #NASAWebb’s resolving power. The colorful inner shell shows tiny knots of gas and the smoky outer layer is where ejected matter rammed into the surrounding material: bit.ly/40IVTOS 🔭 🧪

Cassiopeia A, a circular-shaped cloud of gas and dust with complex structure. The inner shell is made of bright pink and orange filaments studded with clumps and knots that look like tiny pieces of shattered glass. Around the exterior of the inner shell, particularly at the upper right, there are curtains of wispy gas that look like campfire smoke. The white smoke-like material also appears to fill the cavity of the inner shell, featuring structures shaped like large bubbles. Around and within the nebula, there are various stars seen as points of blue and white light. Outside the nebula, there are also clumps of yellow dust, with a particularly large clump at the bottom right corner that appears to have very detailed striations.
