Sadly, after 40+ years as peak body for BM community sector, MCRN has lost funding. we have played central role in critical sector projects; advocacy; networking & partnerships; & led disaster resilience/recovery efforts. This will leave our sector without an independent & representative voice:

Uber’s COO has said that it’s getting “harder to justify” its AI costs because there was no way to show a link between AI spend and any meaningful increase in useful features. This is the first time I’ve seen a company say this directly. www.businessinsider.com/uber-coo-and...
"That link is not there yet, right?" he said. think maybe implicitly there is more that is getting shipped, but it's very hard to draw a line between one of those stats and, 'Okay, now we're actually producing 25% more useful consumer features."
He said that the trade-off costs from Al are harder to justify because he can't draw a direct link. Earlier this month, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in an earnings call that Uber was slowing hiring to counter its investments in AI.The comment led to what he described as a
"head-exploding moment," sparking discussions about AI token consumption within the company and the trade-offs it creates, such as on head count.
He said that, based on talks with Uber's senior engineering leaders, he realized higher token usage did not translate into a proportional increase in useful consumer features.

Australians want a royal commission into femicide. What haunts me is wondering if it’ll be enough to make leaders act
The solutions to ending gender-based violence aren’t a mystery. The problem is that governments refuse to act on them When a social crisis becomes too big to ignore, governments reach for their most powerful instrument: the royal commission. It compels decision-makers to testify, forces institutions into the open, and produces sweeping blueprints for reform. It suspends business-as-usual politics and focuses the nation’s attention on injustice and institutional failure, establishing what went wrong, who was responsible and what must change. Few other mechanisms so publicly expose injustice or centre the voices of people who’ve been harmed. Over the past 50 years Australia has held more than 130 royal commissions, placing a powerful microscope on some of the most intractable areas of social injustice: Aboriginal deaths in custody, institutional child sexual abuse, predatory banking practices, violence against people with disability. Governments called them because institutions routinely failed and caused significant harm. Continue reading...
