Regarding the energy, we find no significant differences between male and female zodiac signs (early refers to the beginning of the male signs compared to the end of the female signs). 13/n

However, these effects can be driven by e.g. seasonal effects. To estimate the causal effect of zodiac signs, we use a RDD design, comparing people burn just around the cutoffs of the sign changes. 12/n

Western zodiac signs encompass energies, modalities, and elements that can theoretically be linked to personality traits that, in turn should affect wages (see the paper for details). 6/n

Matthias Collischon 🇺🇦🇪🇺 @mcollischon.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
In the case of western zodiac signs, we argue that the effects play out via personality traits. If individuals believe zodiac sign is associated with a specific personality trait, they could be more likely to behave accordingly, which could affect labor market outcomes. 5/n

The channel here likely is a self-fulfilling prophecy: teachers and parents invest more in “dragons” due to their believe in Astrology, leading these children to attain higher educational degrees and, in turn, higher wages. 4/n

Matthias Collischon 🇺🇦🇪🇺 @mcollischon.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
Of course, zodiac signs themselves should not affect labor market outcomes directly. But research on Chinese zodiac signs shows that dragons – even in Germany – earn higher wages (see the paper by Florian Zimmermann). Why is that the case? 3/n

Political science also has qualitative work, this should be no excuse for the lack of reproducability criteria in empirical papers. It also seems correct to me that the credibility revolution has not fully reached sociology, even for quantitative empirical papers.
