As the #GamesFromIreland Steam Event begins to wind down, we’d like to highlight some more of the amazing games made in Ireland. From the gothic co-op horror of Eyes of Hellfire to the cozy stop-motion adventure Éalu, Ireland continues to offer games that can’t be found anywhere else.

This is mostly a joke, but there was a point where, due to a bug, the agent picked a square that had already been taken. In my Xs&Os addled state, I did briefly think I'd reinvented the game. Balatro-level success here I come! Then I took a breath and realised, "wait... this... this is nothing"

To the trained/Xs&Os-pilled eye, this simple grid of nine squares contains an entire world of strategies and counter-strategies

Spent the weekend trying to learn about #ReinforcementLearning by training an agent to play Xs & Os / Tic-Tac-Toe. An unexpected side effect is that by playing dozens of games of Xs & Os over a 48-hour period, I have Stockholm syndromed myself into believing that it is the greatest game of all time

Tired: Will the French guy be able to stop the Painter Lady in Clear Obscure or whatever Wired: Who will triumph in the epic 'big sword' battle between Urvarg and Rolf

Another test of the script, this time Rolf is actually allowed to attack. It's not looking good for Rolf, whose armour is destroyed by Urvarg's last attack.

I have created the world's first and only "QUINTUPLE A" gaming experience #gamedev #AAAAA

A screenshot of Visual Studio Code which is showing a very basic game written in Python. The script is running in the terminal in the bottom half of the screen. The print statements describe what is happening in the "game". Two characters are introduced. Urvarg is introduced with the line "It's Urvarg, baby!". Rolf is introduced with "It's Rolf! Keep Rolfing Rolfing Rolfing Rolfing" in a very vague reference to Limp Bizkit. Both then introduce themselves with variations of "Rarg, I'm a scary guy, watch out for me!!! OOOooohh". Urvarg then attacks Rolf 5 times. After the 3rd one, Rolf is on 0 HP, so he should be dead, but the script isn't sophisticated enough to pick up on that.

(Yes I am using this thread to workshop a LinkedIn post. Here's my original "not safe for LinkedIn" draft for the cool kids of Bluesky) If you're interested in reading something about AI that doesn't talk to you like you're a dog then I would highly recommend this book!

The book gives a great summary of these arguments from both a technical and a more philosophical or abstract perspective. There's also some really good material on key Machine Learning topics like Reinforcement Learning, Computer Vision and Sentiment Analysis. An informative and enlightening read!

It's from 2019, so LLMs don't really factor in, at least not explicitly. But that's part of what I liked about it! It's good to be reminded that "AI" as a field wasn't invented 3 years ago and that there's a rich tradition of people thinking about and assessing this subject stretching back decades

If you're on the hunt for a last-minute Christmas present for the tech-head in your life, I would highly recommend Artificial Intelligence: A Guide for Thinking Humans by Melanie Mitchell. It was one of the best books I read this year! #book #ai #notThatAiThough

The cover of a book called Artificial Intelligence A Guide for Thinking Humans by Melanie Mitchell. There's a pixelated picture of the author with numbers on each square in reference to how Computer Vision works

Had a great first day at @conference.aiandgames.com! Lots of great talks, and I even got some cool game recommendations out of it!

Exterior, the Richard Hoggart building at Goldsmiths University. You can just about make out the blue conference banners (I'm not very good at taking pictures)

Hey folks, I've added Metaphor: ReFantazio to my Steam curator page with a nice big thumbs up. I probably would've added it sooner, but it's been a game that I've kept for myself and have been enjoying a little at a time over a long time. It's pretty great! 👍 store.steampowered.com/app/2679460/...
