Their loud screaming, plus the generally conservative bias of our institutions, resulted in widespread normalization of conservatives acting like assholes and refusing to follow any rules.

This has been the go-to right wing move for the past 20 years: act like an asshole and refuse to follow any rules, then when you get in trouble for that, scream “political bias.”

Part of how we got here was that media standards against bigotry, hate speech, and lies disproportionately caught Republicans, the Republicans pointed to the disproportionality as evidence of conspiracy, the media caved, and now bigotry, hate speech, and lies have all been normalized.

The Detroit Free Press allowed readers to submit their verdict on who won the debate between Dr. Abdul El Sayed and Mike Rogers— but the only two people who said Rogers won decided to include anti Arab slurs in their letters in addition to abject lies. So the DFP refused to publish them.

Like, yes, Limbaugh was a right wing shit and a mean-spirited blowhard, but he was ALSO the least funny comedian you’ve ever heard.

McBoo-lie @mcjulie.bsky.social · 13h
I still remember years ago listening to Limbaugh for maybe 10 minutes while we waited for an older relative to be ready to go somewhere, and the entire time he was trying to describe this cartoon he thought was really funny, but kept interrupting himself by laughing.

McBoo-lie @mcjulie.bsky.social · 13h
When you think about it, Rush Limbaugh’s schtick was basically slow-motion standup comedy, even less funny than most right wing comics, but he did it for 6 hours a day which… was popular for some reason, hell if I know.

To our detriment, we as an audience made the mistake of allowing stand-up comics to convince *themselves* that they're all rabble-rousing truth-tellers a la George Carlin or Bill Hicks*, when the truth is that many of them are actually there to reinforce the existing social order.

But in order to do that, you have to give the AI semi-autonomic access to your bank account, your credit cards, your phone and internet and other utilities, your online rent payment system, etc. Which seems like something you would have to be *nuts* to do with the current technology.

McBoo-lie @mcjulie.bsky.social · 13h
Like, imagine that you wanted an AI to manage your money for you — pay your bills, categorize your expenses, point out patterns in how you spend money, answer questions like “how much money would I really save by bringing my lunch from home?”

McBoo-lie @mcjulie.bsky.social · 13h
There’s a kind of built-in paradox here, where in order for something like an AI assistant to be genuinely useful, you have to give it access to information that opens up a lot of potential problems without much stronger guardrails than anything that currently seems to exist.

there is and always has been a huge market for "comedy" that is just a guy standing on stage saying bigoted stuff about minority groups. It's honestly just a different thing with different goals than other forms of comedy.

its unfortunate that gallagher is mostly remembered for his veg-o-matic hammer bit because he's actually the best example of this. if you go back and watch his sets from the 70s they are basically hate rallies where every "joke" is just him mocking gays or women or minorities to HUGE audiences.

its really funny and revealing to me that so many comedians - even guys with good politics - talk about andrew dice clay as a revered elder statesman when his actual act was just bigotry with barely any actual jokes besides his "satirical" persona (that audiences didnt realize was an act)

This is how the media does it. “Can $1 billion buy victory in the midterm elections? Some Republicans fear the answer is no" probably was changed “officially” for other reasons (too long, not “active” enough) but the change still paints Republicans in a more powerful “winning” light.

Just look at the way damn near everyone (including otherwise thoughtful people on this app) treats those of us who actually do cater to a presumed female audience. Believe me. Just because women are buying most of the books doesn't mean publishing as a whole values them more. Or at all.

I am trying to swerve this topic because of course it makes me black out with rage... But publishing has a deep assumption baked into it that I must yearn for male readers to validate me as serious. Men are the target audience we all must strive to please if we want credibility.

Okay, I am looking at this gendered reading piece by Ross Barkan and I have many thoughts and questions. Part of the thesis is this:
A more challenging question can be asked: If more books were published by men with explicitly masculine themes, would there actually be a wider male readership? It’s the old chicken-and-egg dilemma. The audience won’t emerge because the product isn’t there, and the product isn’t there because the audience is elsewhere. Men, obviously, can read and enjoy books by women, but there is the sticky biological reality that, on balance, women will probably prefer reading women, and men may prefer reading men. Boys, especially, seem to long for male teachers and role models in the classroom. As they age, and if they want to read, they might be drawn to the fiction of writers like Ernest Hemingway, Raymond Carver, and McMurtry. They might want literature that, at the bare minimum, seems masculine.
