Haven’t spent a lot of time tuning or optimizing. Tried several tuning options on rook was only running single replicas even etc. perf numbers fyi. More to do early days

This is why I'm running used servers for build farm (and lab) stuff... ECC memory, enterprise hardware, etc.. yes, it's used, but... even USED this kinda stuff tends to be pretty solid. ECC ram in PARTICULAR IMHO is one of the most key things I want in any system!

Trialing @truenas.bsky.social CSI driver. RIGHT NOW... I'm VERY impressed. iSCSI working well and destroys rook ceph on performance! Other tidbits? Claude helped set all of this up and did WELL doing so. SO kudos to BOTH. Good smoke tests, perf tests, etc.! Updating lab repo now!

I'm working on updating my lab monitoring - I'm moving almost everything to @clickhouse.com for storage. UI is annoying though. HyperDX isn't quite as functional as Grafana, and NEITHER give "click on this to drill in" (IMHO go try @honeycomb.io or NewRelic or similar). STILL prefer those!

There's a quote here from @charity.wtf that I think is KEY. "AI is not magic, it is technology". aboard.com/podcast/char... .. To me - SAME THING ON SPRING BOOT, Clickhouse, etc.! This stuff is NOT magic. There's too much "magic" commentary in the tech world dang it!

Seeing similar - it's catching state machine issues on sql concurrency, redis consistency even down to library (aka a java Jedis issue), etc. It's been CRAZY impressive how well it does. Now it screwed up a liquibase CHANGELOG change impact - was too wide on one change, but overall.. WOW

"Our investigation developed proof beyond a reasonable doubt that President Trump engaged in serious crimes against our nation," Yeah pretty much this says it all. But people don't like the message, so they attack the messenger.

I say "everyone treated equally". I should amend: There are those who've had a TOUGH life who deserve EXTRA attention/support. Thus... SNAP programs, and support systems. IMHO those are part of a society that supports it's people.

Trans: I don't have to understand trans nor do I want to NOR need to. They're human beings and I don't have to understand them to be decent to someone trans, let them live their lives as they choose, etc. THIS is how I argue for rights - I want EVERYONE treated the same no matter who they are.

I'll also say for languages I HATE like UI work - it's much better than me ever having to look at a pnpm lockfile ever again. I'd MUCH rather vibe that.

5 has gotten WAY WAY better too, and 5.5 opus is doing MUCH better. I've... finally let it have access to push though at times I ALSO still go plan mode - I have a few "vibe" PRs but I ALWAYS evaluate them afterwards still - and usually find 1-2 things AI misses.

Datacenters. To me, it's a bit like restricting CAFO's - all a matter of regulations AND research. You limit who, where, how, and impacts. EXAMPLES: REQUIRE them to pay for the new electricity. Don't allow incentives. 3000' minimum distance to a house. Water restrictions. Waste restrictions. ETC.

ONE thing I've noticed - AI does rather well at handling my typos. I have at endency to do what I just did - try to go to fast and make spaces after the character I'd intended. AI seems to handle and adjust to this rather well (or at least..... @claudecode.bsky.social handles this). Nice!

One of the things about AI I'm MOST thankful for? Having AI deal with NPM/PNPM/Javascript/UI work ;) it does VERY well at it and I no longer have to look at package.json or lockfiles or eslint or half a dozen other things that drove me insane. I'm a backend guy for sure!

I've got a half rack so space been an issue. i prefer unifi to keep it all managed (vlan's primarily for work vs. lab vs. home separation). Would go for as many ports as I can get but NOT in a rush too ;) Thankfully it's also sitting under steps next to some DL380 G9 servers so noise ok

I'd been wondering about that ;) store.ui.com/us/en/catego... looked REALLY interesting (though sold out atm)... and wondered if this would actually handle this MUCH better... 32 10gb ports... was VERY interesting to me, particularly if used store.ui.com/us/en/catego... where needed? Thoughts?

I'm actively considering upgrading my #homelab to 10gb networking... but I KNOW many devices don't go to 10gb (older stuff)... but still thinking it'd help a LOT. Have to do a few upgrades on a few machines, and my NAS needs then a 10gb network card for sure...

A favorite thing to do as a developer is reduce lines of code. Reducing the amount of complexity, duplication, or otherwise simplifying codebases is one of the best feelings and one that doesn't happen NEAR enough. Refactoring helps, but so does "use standard libs" or "this is old/unused kill it"

AI: EVEN WITH latest models, STILL treat it like pair programming and you're the senior dev. It is getting better... but still misses things. "This returns a string, let me add JsonNode to parse the results" STOP - there ARE concrete classes to help! KNOW the libraries/SDKs/APIs you're using!

Allies are how we progress. Enemies are how we lose. Enemies & allies should be selected based upon how they treat their people. AND who someone looks up/chooses as friends/allies says more about them than most other actions. FYI I love #canada!

Unpopular opinion: Trump WAS right that Iran was an issue no one dealt/wanted to deal with. What he screwed up on was NO plan (not even a bad plan). Start publicly with allies, congress, goals, keep those consistent, etc. THEN go alone if needed. PLAN! It isn't wrong to step it. It's wrong HOW.

The majority of people give a damn about how much it costs to afford groceries each month. Until that gets fixed, it's harder to think about things beyond what's in front of people. Same issue with the environment or even Iran - does it impact feeding the kids or paying the rent choices.

For those looking at git alternatives to github (to be fair it's up... mostly ... 99%? of the time). There's harness.io (disclosure I work for them, OSS: github.com/harness/harness), gitlab.com, about.gitea.com and other solutions (I like self-hosting). Re-evaluate regularly all of them!

ONE OF THE most annoying things I see in code lately is mocks that don't need to be mock objects. Just seeing today, cleaning up "mock out the #Micrometer registry" for SimpleRegistry objects. Even on http clients - use a real server for mock RESPONSES - helps identify framework issues!

I'm still not built for it... 😆 but I don't recall ever having to yell at you 🙃 AI on the other hand... sonnet 5 seems to do MUCH better. 4.6 is... painful at times so I have to watch it MUCH more. And yell at it much more. "STOP!!!" I was very annoyed yesterday with it.

For any "XP" programmers remembering paired programming. A lot of times, that's ALSO what AI feels. Sitting watching while a junior programmer works through various things. Only I can yell at AI - I'd not yell at a junior dev! NORMALLY a junior dev ALSO learns from their mistakes.

*@#$^% The amount of times I had to tell AI this am "Look spring boot 4 defines jackson versions, DO NOT do it", and AI responds "spring boot 4 doesn't define jackson versions for 3 let me do this for you". 5 models are better, but still struggle at times. STILL DO NOT trust blindly!

I interact with many orgs "We're vmware. We migrated to Proxmox /nutanix/etc. k8s on hardware in datacenters! EKS/GKE! AWS EC2 only k8s is bad! ECS FTW! etc!" It's PEOPLE that drive this BUT not sure how much it really matters. AS LONG AS your CUSTOMERS are happy - i'm partial to on prem though!

The trick is to continuously run & sync it. E.g. @harnessio.bsky.social we have an IACM system that can look for out of sync or changes and help you NOT hit this issue. (Disclosure I work for @harnessio.bsky.social ). Course I recommend open tofu over terraform at this point!

Got plenty of ram/cpu. 2x G9 HP380's ;) each with about 200gb of ram. Multi-node k8s cluster for testing/local env. Home assistant/playground stuff. Main thing is local spinnaker & harness install. Adding #proxmox #haproxy tooling for deployments of apps to VMs vs. k8s.

Jason McIntosh @mcintosh.farm · 19/07/2026
Yeah I switched just yesterday to nfs csi and performance is night and day difference… I’d wonder how proxmox ceph would perform as I like the idea of ceph. I rather liked the idea of gluster but it seems dead.

Jason McIntosh @mcintosh.farm · 18/07/2026
Seriously about to drop #rook-ceph in my lab k8s cluster. Performance has been HORRIBLE(4x microk8s nodes on proxmox). NFS on truenas is performing REALLY well (also a VM). OR iSCSI with #democratic-csi or something else? COULD do #ceph via #proxmox & ceph-csi as an option. Thoughts?

At times I swear working with AI is like chasing my kids around. "Don't do that, do this!" "STOP, don't do that!" "No this is what I REALLY meant, let me explain in depth". "Did you really just do that?" "Apparently i didn't explain this right" 😮‍💨 Helps but can be very trying at times.

Gotta say... fable model is a lot like having an intelligent coworker, where sonnet/opus is more like a tool you use. Much more interesting and intelligent and solid responses. BUT gotta be careful of how much time you take of that coworker and isn't always right. I'm impressed though.

Burger King app SUCKS. I order through app. App crashes/stops responding half way to store. I restart app. Cart is still there, not seeing a purchase, hit purchase, and... now I have TWO charges on my card. I get only one order. BK says "we'll offer a coupon we can't refund". UGH.
