There are other clues to how winky the movie Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze is going to be but this was an early, wild idea with its opening credits:

opening credit: "The Music of John Philip Sousa" where the 'USA' in 'Sousa' is colored Red, White and Blue

Just saw a lb review call something "qualityslop," we'll really reinvent the English language just to remain chicly dissatisfied won't we?

Just watched End of Oak Street. Anyway, here's some examples of split diopter shots with dramatic intentions.

Mission Impossible (1996), the tension Tom Cruise hanging above an unaware CIA agent

Gun Crazy (1950), a kid shooting at an animal while the young version of our lead clenches his fist in angst

The Immigrant (2013), the last shot showcasing the two paths our leads take away from each other

Blow Out (1981), a sound recorder recording the foley of an owl and the owl at an impossible visual angle for the recorder but an appropriately dramatic one for the viewer

Discomfort is an essential part of growth and wouldn’t it be so embarrassing to be the exact same person thirty years from now, in a totally different world, because you were so averse to discomfort?

Once you start noticing how the incapacity to handle discomfort affects how people live their lives it's actually pretty shocking how it ruins pretty much every conceivable aspect of existence. Interpersonal relationships, romantic and platonic. Career and education opportunities. Your politics Your willingness to go anywhere. The kind of food you eat. The kind of art you expose yourself to and your ability to read it. It's never just one thing, it touches everything, and once you notice it it's like suddenly being able to see germs or something. Just this horrific catastrophe people look at you askance for screaming about. As I grow older and see what became of my friends and peers who could not learn to handle discomfort, the more I'm like. This is a genuine societal issue

Increasing my discomfort tolerance has also been one of the greatest assets to improving my mental health.

The Samurai and the Prisoner (2026) - Outdoing Nolan's take on the Odyssey by actually letting the philosophy of war have stakes, but also shades of Kurosawa's Cloud in debating the value of potential of clans and stations in warfare; but importantly a very fun miniseries of murder mysteries.

Dial Code Santa Claus (1989) - Has the soul of a warped expressionistic take on a child's world shaken by the perversion of their most innocent sanctity of the spirit of Christmas, in a body made out of 80s action/horror schlock, and somehow works. Hilarious "Eye of the Tiger" knock-off theme.

13 Frightened Girls (1963), William Castle does Obayashi's House in the more proper sale: a genre experiment tailored to meet young women on their level while being a fun and well-produced adventure. An unserious Bond-ish plot but constantly well-composed and I found the female solidarity touching!

Watched "You Can't Win" on kanopy (also on tubi) because it's a Robinson Devor film that was filmed in 2012 and shelved, probably too early to be the streaming novelty it can be now (especially with poster-clad much younger Garner and White who are in it for about a minute or two each). 1/2

Watching "Carnival in the Night." There's probably some Japanese salaryman equivalent of a Harry Dean Stanton who's got an incidental credit in every 70s-80s indie Japanese movie as just a random guy on the street going to work.

The Gumball Rally (1976) posits a utopia where those with extensive means and privilege above the law decide to do a Wacky Races when they're bored instead of strip the copper wiring out of America. A fun if low-brow showcase for fast cars, stunts, and some gags. On the TCM app for a few more days.

If you were wondering if someone who worked on the straight to streaming movie Wardriver has seen Blackhat, which it sounds awfully like a small scale indie stab at, the answer is: at least someone in the art department!

Besides the point for a lot (and glad no one got hurt it seems) and I get it's no surprise that the same political sphere that's anti-science is allowing slipshod productions on this or their films, but you'd think there'd be SOME union producer involved wanting to avoid OSHA fees.

A famous local LA restaurant called Spoon shut down probably because of a ploy like this, as they were getting scammed through cancelled or refunded Doordash orders and even on one of over $700 of food which they documented making and giving with photos, still lost the money on.
