Giving this site another try. What’s current best practice for the custom algo stuff? Is that still a thing? Any other ways I can make my feed better?

My dad worked with Jim Lovell (presumably on Earth) many years ago and had a few thoughts in reply to a post I made about him. He’s also had a signed copy of Earthrise on his wall my whole life, and I think that’s one of the coolest things ever.

Mr. President, not only am I helping put a man on the moon, but I'm going to inspire supporting players with an apocryphal story about me for decades to come.

Real estate developers and energy companies are good! The issue is that we shouldn’t sell Federally owned wilderness to *anyone*, not that people want to build housing and power infrastructure.

It's about the dehumanizing effects of overzealous law enforcement and how prioritizing punishment over justice destroys families and lives, including (spoiler alert) that of the enforcer. Probably not relevant to this guy.

Bought fancy RAM from a Reddit guy in a parking lot off 280 today because I’m worried about cosmic rays.

The worst part of no longer having away messages is that they disappeared because it’s no longer possible to be “away” from the internet.

Not to be argumentative, but why? I’m having trouble coming up with downsides that aren’t covered by GINA.

Having been on it for a few months, I’ve decided the anti aging effects of Ozempic are because your pants go from Millennial fit to Zoomer fit.

Net profit doesn’t include share buybacks because they’re not an expense (other than, since the IRA, they increase the company’s tax liability). Executive comp was like $45M in that fiscal year when they lost half a billion.

Gross profit is not net profit. Last quarter was their first profitable quarter ever. They lost about $550M the last full year they reported and they have like a 5% profit margin.

Sure, especially because it’s concentrated around peak times. I also think the idea is to fund the MTA more with the money, and the combination of stick (congestion tax) and carrot (better funded subway) will reduce the demand for cars more than either on their own.

No, just emphasizing that distinction you noted between the man and his employer. Whatever legitimate grievances people have with UHC or healthcare generally, I don’t think they warrant celebrating the death of someone apparently trying to improve it. I’m sorry for your loss.

If you thought you were safe from Spotify wrapped here: sorry. I don’t have much to say about it but: I wasn’t prepared to suddenly love bluegrass so much, Johnny Cash is a staple but “I’ve Been Everywhere” is lpart of a multi-year plan to crush it at karaoke, and Eminem surprised me (a lot).

I think it’s heartless to let distaste for private health insurance make you feel unsympathetic to a guy getting murdered. He used to run their Medicare and retirement divisions and recently pivoted towards preventative care. It seemed like he was a perfectly OK guy, just in the healthcare business.

I don’t really enjoy the default algo here so please recommend good replacements to me. @charczuk.com said this one is pretty good and I agree, but I’m interested in ones with more discovery too! bsky.app/profile/why....

I had this thought too, but I think two things: 1. this is from the neck up (he’s in considerably better shape) and 2. his goal is to age more slowly — I’m interested to see how he looks in 10, 20, 30+ years

This is a delicate question, but are you equally as proud of IE4 as IE6? I think the general consensus is that IE4 was groundbreaking, but was there more under the hood for IE6 that you think was underappreciated?

How are swappable algos going to work on this app? Are they installed client side, like Winamp skins for the information you’re exposed to? Or do they have to be installed by your instance or something? (I have no idea how the AT protocol works)

Something about SF that you can’t stop noticing once you see it: the utterly unhinged indoor lighting choices. Hue bulbs turning apartments into European nightclub bathrooms. Every building looks like a scrambled Rubik’s cube. The whole city feels like a Piet Mondrian painting.

FYI, the US is able to see an annular eclipse in October 2023 and a solar eclipse in April 2024. The solar eclipse is the last one over the US until 2044. Buy your glasses early and make sure they're genuine!

I spend too much on candles and will flatly reject any advice to spend less on them, which leads to budgeting problems.
