Great view of York Minster over the roofs of High Petergate. It's tempting to say the view has changed little since 1640, when the bldg housing the current pub was built, but most of the foreground bldgs were reconstructed in 1905. The half-timbered bldg was a tenement & may have looked similar.
View of York Minster over the rooftops from an upper room at The Eagle & Child pub, High Petergate.
The distinctive sandstone twin towers of The Minster soar above the red terracotta tiles of 3-storey buildings across the street from the viewpoint in the 3rd floor of the pub.
The main building opposite is mock-Tudor half-timbered with black framing & white plaster.
Originally a block of tenements, they had become structurally unsound.
Further down, the brick buildings are Edwardian, dating from 1905, when extensive reconstruction was carried out, although re-using much salvaged materials.
The building that is now the pub from which the photo was taken was built in 1640, but has been a pub only for a few years.
The line of the street and the name is recorded on local maps from about 1190.
The Minster is technically the Cathedral & Metropolitical Church of St Peter in York. Although in its current form it has existed since completion in about 1350, there was a stone church of St Peter on the site since the mid 600s, and it gave its name to the street.

Trump is accusing oil refiners of gouging Americans and demanding a DOJ investigation after his Iran war helped send gas above $4 a gallon through August—the most expensive August at the pump on record. When your policy sets the kitchen on fire, apparently the smoke alarm is the suspect.

Popular Scots comic character Oor Wullie dressed to commemorate renowned Royal British Legion poppy appeal collector Tom Gilzean. Multiple versions of the statue formed a trail around the city of Edinburgh. This one in Princes Street. Nelson Monument, Balmoral Hotel & Scott Monument, L-R behind.
"Life-sized" statue of Oor Wullie.
Oor Wullie is a well-loved comic character from popular Scottish newspaper The Sunday Post.
He has been about 10 yrs old for 90 years since he first appeared in the paper in March 1936.
Normally, Wullie wears black dungarees and "tackety boots" - boots with metal studs in the soles for hard-wearing.
For the trail, statues were decorated in a variety of ways to celebrate different things.
This version wears tartan trews (trousers), a short black highland dress jacket with traditional square silver buttons on the front and sleeve cuffs. He wears a white dinner shirt and black bow-tie.
In memory of legendary Royal British Legion poppy appeal collector Tom Gilzean, he wears a chest full of military medals and a Tam O'Shanter bunnet (bonnet) with a tartan band and regimental crest badge.
Although Willie is about 10, this statue has grey hair & eyebrows in tribute to Tom.
Wullie is seated on his trademark upturned bucket.
He leans back laughing, with both feet off the ground and his hands on his belly.
The statue is on the broad slabbed pavement of Princes Street, Edinburgh. It is a sunny day with a blue sky & white clouds.
At the top left of the frame there is a yellow & red Royal Banner of Scotland (Lion Rampant) overhanging from an adjacent shop front.
In the background can be seen the Nelson Monument atop Calton Hill, The Balmoral Hotel and The Scott Monument.

The Balmoral Hotel, 1 Princes Street, Edinburgh. Built in 1902 by the North British Railway Company adjacent to Waverley railway station, the hotel was originally known as the North British Hotel. The clock is kept 3 mins fast to help rail travellers catch their trains.
The image shows the iconic square clock tower and top floors of The Balmoral Hotel. The clock shows 16.00 although the photo was taken at 15.57.
A Scottish Saltire flag flies from the flagpole atop the clock tower.
The sky is a dull gray.
The building style of the hotel is Victorian Renaissance Revival with distinct Scottish Baronial influences.
The French-inspired roof uses ornate dormer windows and mansard roof accents, popular in late 19th-century luxury railway hotels across Europe.
