CRISPR HDR genome editing uses a repair template. But the @mccabelab.org in @epfl-brainmind.bsky.social found these templates sneak into the #Drosophila genome uninvited, corrupting downstream results. Minis, aka spontaneous synaptic neurotransmitter vesicle release, was long dismissed as noise. Our new 📄 using optical electrophysiology shows minis are not spontaneous at all. They're an independent release modality regulated by Unc-5 & critical for synapse preservation 👉 doi.org/10.64898/202...

Weird results from CRISPR/Cas9 Homology Directed Repair (HDR) based genome editing? We show that frequently the HDR template vector becomes incorporated into the genome causing all sorts of problems. Apply to now for an open PhD position working on motor neuroscience in our laboratory. We investigate motor system synapse and circuit function in #Drosophila and apply our models to understand human motor system dysfunction during ageing and in the disorders #ALS, #FTD and #SMA.
