When it comes to the policies that govern us, we should all be concerned when those in charge find it laughable that someone would point out that the organization responsible for their bill language is a designated hate group. More info on our Insta www.instagram.com/freedomokl...

Sometimes I get stuck worried if the meds even help, since they don't address feeling always tired. And then I have to go 2 days without meds because of pharmacy under-scheduling, and I can report, they are indeed doing a lot

One of the worst things about narcolepsy, is that none of the treatment makes me less tired. Instead it is solely stimulants to ensure I stay awake.

Losing Nex upended lives in and beyond Oklahoma. There's a profound grief in marking 1 year since Nex died with the conditions that killed Nex having only worsened. I'm grateful to @leximcmenamin.bsky.social for the care with which they told this story, and gave space for our community to reflect.

And that folks making policy regardless of their party could use the reminder about the importance of non-gendered language in policy and their discussion around it (issue here was raised because the Dem author was talking about breast cancer screening only in terms of women).

But it's almost like by avoiding gendered language in legislation, we can limit unintended exclusion so everyone can access the resources they need.

In House Public Health where there's been a question from the Republican Chair who has authored at least 1 anti-trans bill this session, to make sure a breast cancer screening bill authored by a Dem is available to folks of all genders because everyone can be impacted.

No demand I show my face at the #OKleg security station today. Seems like maybe yesterday's policy might have been more about fear of the dominant public presence at the Capitol being anti-fascist than actual security.

After the recent State of the State address, which failed to adequately address the needs of Oklahomans, it feels like the right moment to share some of the bills we’re tracking this week. bit.ly/LegeTrkr25
ID: The text reads: “week 1” on the left side of the graphic from top to bottom. In the center of the graphic, it says “bills on the move this week” with an arrow pointing to the right to signal to scroll through the rest of the images. At the bottom right hand corner there is there's a satellite dish. At the top right-hand corner there is a small brown child with curly hair looking through binoculars. In fun (read not at all fun) new policies at the #okleg, you are apparently forced to unmask briefly at security. I was told it was both "so the system can get a picture of you" and so "everyone at the security desk can see you."

Several of these bills then extrapolate that antisemitism as defined in this way should be evidence of discriminatory intent.
Screenshot of OK HB 2243 "All state departments and agencies shall consider
antisemitism as evidence of discriminatory intent for any law or
policy in this state which prohibits discrimination based on race,
color, religion, or national origin or provides for enhanced
criminal penalties for criminal offenses when the defendant
intentionally selected any victim or group of victims or any
property as the object of the offense because of such victim's or
group of victims' actual or perceived race, color, religion, or
national origin."

One concerning thing I am noticing as I am reading through #OKleg bills this session, is several policies from folks in both parties defining antisemitism in statute using a definition that has examples of critique of Israel.

And those conversations are always part of the work, but it lands so differently when it's the accusation of not honoring Nex in death, as I carry the immense grief of his loss, and the balance of trying to make sure he is fully honored after others chose a narrative for him.

nicole @mcafee2012.bsky.social · 12/01/2025
That means that in the months since, I, a nonbinary person who uses they/she pronouns, has to be on the responding end again and again of well meaning folks trying to tell me that it's wrong to use he/him pronouns for Nex or suggest that nonbinary folks are limited to only they/them pronouns.
100
nicole @mcafee2012.bsky.social · 12/01/2025
So when folks closest to Nex made clear that yes, Nex had used they/them pronouns, but had transitioned with trusted folks to he/him pronouns, and would have been most accurately remembered with he/him pronouns, few made the switch.
100
nicole @mcafee2012.bsky.social · 12/01/2025
But media and even many 2SLGBTQ+ orgs ignored my ask, because they felt it wasn't worth the extra effort to explain to the public that Nex may have still been exploring gender in a way that didn't fit nicely in a finished box. Those folks chose nonbinary and they/them pronouns for Nex.
100
nicole @mcafee2012.bsky.social · 12/01/2025
We similarly used 2STGNC+ to acknowledge that it seemed Nex was still on a gender journey, and it wasn't our role to choose for Nex in death an identity that maybe no longer served them.

nicole @mcafee2012.bsky.social · 12/01/2025
When I had the responsibility of sharing the news of Nex's death through my work at @freedomoklahoma.bsky.social, we knew Nex broadly used they/them pronouns, and used he/him pronouns with folks Nex was closest to. In initial sharing, we chose not to use pronouns and asked others to do the same.
Screenshot from a Freedom Oklahoma post with text "We have heard varying reports of how Nex communicated gender, and have avoided using pronouns for Nex here, as we don’t have 100% clarity on Nex’s correct pronouns, and will not engage in the harm of guessing or misgendering Nex or using incorrect pronouns. Using someone’s correct pronouns has a measurable impact on that person’s wellbeing, and we ask that others respect Nex in death until, if at all, we’re able to learn Nex’s correct pronouns. For more information about pronoun usage, here is GLSEN’s guide to pronouns."

Next month marks 1 year since we lost Nex Benedict. There are so many waves of grief and rage for me as we approach a date where my life and many others were profoundly changed by the loss of Nex. And as I think about that, today I think about the particular harm of early reporting on Nex's death.
