For a few years in the '70s, the Supreme Court banned capital punishment on the grounds that it was cruel and unusual punishment as well as discriminatory. It still is both of those things, but today, SCOTUS cleared the way for a botched execution before appeals were properly exhausted.

What use was it to bring the writer and activist Chanel Miller to campus in the spring just for fraternity brothers to scroll, bored, on their phones as she movingly shared her experience as Emily Doe, the victim of Brock Turner? As I wrote at the time, I was floored and dismayed as I sat in the audience with one of my brilliant undergraduates; we heard Miller’s shattering account of being sexually assaulted by Turner behind a dumpster at Stanford University after a fraternity party. Her talk was riveting, and there was so much to learn from it. And yet many of the male students who hailed predominantly from fraternities — 15 percent of each chapter was required to be in attendance — were so tuned out that Miller commented ruefully: “You know, this has been my hardest gig, because they didn’t turn down the house lights. I’m not sure how you professors do it, because it’s so hard looking out at this sea of mildly disgruntled faces. I mean, I’m sure you’re all very moved, but …,” Miller smiled. The implication being, it didn’t seem like it, from her angle.

Eric Schmitt’s conspiracy theory, slander and b-ball ignorance yesterday was humiliating. But also remember who he is: a natcon with a blood-and-soil belief that the only real Americans are descended from white Christians who immigrated before the mid-1800s. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

the dumbest scumbags on the left are now attacking zohran for *combatting antisemitism* Zohran derangement syndrome is real and applies to the alt-left just as much as the alt right

I'm not criticizing Zohran for doing this because I understand he has to deal with a very toxic political reality. Politics is a different game.
But to me launching a "Strategy to Combat
Antisemitism" in a time of the Gaza genocide is akin to a
"Strategy to Combat Anti-Whiteness" at the height of South African apartheid. That's not even a fair analogy:
Israel and its apologists do infinitely more to both fabricate and encourage anti-Semitism.

Feel however you want to feel about Israel. The second you use Israel to justify a shooting at a synagogue on Yom Kippur, you're rationalizing your desire to see Jews murdered. If you're tempted to argue with me on this point, seek therapy immediately in the hope that you could become less evil.

People forget that you can WALK to Canada from parts of Buffalo. Of course Buffalo franchises have lots of Canadian fans, and it's not somehow un-American to respect those fans. Frankly, I question both the intelligence and the morality of anyone who has a problem with this.

1. This is a naked attack on press freedom by a president who hates it. 2. There are limits to the president's ability to carry out this threat thanks to the First Amendment. 3. It's also a threat to the "Other Fake News Media Outlets" who can face similar punishment based on their reporting.

I actually do think that Democrats should disavow anyone with a significant following who claims to support them but habitually traffics in bigotry. I just think Republicans should be held to the same standard, and if they were, they'd have to drop most of their leaders, not just Twitch streamers.

Why are people still telling scientists that we need to compromise with MAHA? How about if we tell MAHA that they can come to the table when they respect the scientific method instead.

On Nov. 21, 1922, in the NY Times' first story about an up-and-coming politician named Adolf Hitler, the Times said "Hitler's anti-Semitism was not so genuine or violent as it sounded." Yes, really. We should remember that when news media dismiss Trump's insane rhetoric. Take. It. Seriously.
"But several reliable, well-informed sources confirmed the idea that Hitler's anti-Semitism was not so genuine or violent as it sounded, and that he was merely using anti-Semite propaganda as a bait to catch masses of followers and keep them aroused, enthusiastic and in line for the time when his organization is perfected and sufficiently powerful to be employed effectively for political purposes."

It's like a parody, but it's deadly serious; the Commerce Department (which includes Census, NOAA, and others) has outright deleted "don't alter or suppress scientific findings for political reasons" from its scientific integrity rules. Seriously.
Protecting against "inappropriate influence" is no longer a "hallmark" of scientific integrity

The Commerce Department updated its policy for promoting a "culture of scientific integrity" in January 2025, days before Trump's second inauguration.

A new Trump administration order bans the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Analysis from using statistical “noise,” or data for fuzzing survey results, to protect people’s privacy in their statistics.

The 2025 version included bans on attempts to shape or interfere in data collection, statistical analysis and other scientific activities "against well-accepted scientific methods and theories or without scientific justification."

The department's policy, the 2025 version said, involves ensuring scientific findings at its agencies "are not suppressed, delayed, or altered for political purposes and are not subjected to inappropriate influence," as well as making sure there's "independent review of facilities, methodologies, and other scientific activities as appropriate to ensure scientific integrity."

That language is missing, however, in the Trump administration's revision of the policy, according to an NPR analysis of text posted on the Commerce Department's website.

And while the revision adopts a definition for "scientific integrity" that is similar to the previous version, it no longer says that "protection from inappropriate influence" is among the "hallmarks of scientific integrity."
