The Pennsylvania Measles Mess
Did state officials overstate the evidence for deaths from the disease?

Many health-care workers are being encouraged to run wild with the latest AI software—even tools that have yet to be approved by the FDA, Benjamin Mazer writes. This enthusiasm feels unprecedented, he argues, and could lead to consequential mistakes:

Liked this article by @mazer.us in @theatlantic.com To take the analogy further, just like taxi drivers (doctors) and roads (health systems) had little say in the rollout, medical AI will have tiers of service where the customer will have vastly different safety www.theatlantic.com/health/2026/...
In this way, the emergence of today's AI health products remind me of the rise, in the 2010s, of ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft. The taxi industry is heavily regulated, making it difficult for new players to enter the market. Yet by skirting and at times ignoring those rules, ride-sharing companies were able to acquire a critical mass of users in a short period of time. Pretty soon, governments had little choice but to adjust their laws to match what had by then become the status quo. The same pattern could end up playing out in medicine. Will regulations meant to ensure that medical products are safe and effective remain in force? Or will they instead be weakened or removed to clear the path for tools that everyone is already using?

Fauci issued plenty of incorrect statements during the pandemic (along with many correct ones). His fans were ridiculed as having a religious devotion. Today, Fauci is more trusted than our current healthcare leaders, RFK Jr and Dr. Oz. They should be calling him up for advice.

The medical contrarians now in power seem a bit surprised that not everyone is giving them the benefit of the doubt or always interpreting their actions in the best possible light. I do wonder if it has occurred to them that they once did the same thing to public officials.

I don't know why everyone keeps insisting that MAHA is anti-vax. The MAHA Institute simply wants you to know that America’s health crisis is driven by a massive epidemic of vaccine injury.

Trust yourself, not your doctor. Every individual needs to talk to their doctor before putting a medication into their body. Which is it? MAHA is talking out of both sides of its mouth when it comes to vaccines. www.theatlantic.com/health/2026/...

One way to get the media to stop talking about vaccines so much would be to not have the country’s most notorious anti-vaxxer running the healthcare system. RFK Jr spent decades trying to get the media to make vaccines controversial. Now he’s the dog that caught the car.
011
Benjamin Mazer @mazer.us · 02/03/2026
One can reasonably debate what "anti-vaccine" means in many cases. But RFK jr going up to strangers and telling them not to vaccinate their kids should meet anyone's definition. Anyone who is being honest, at least.

Saying there's no singular anti-vaccine movement is like saying there are no democrats or republicans. Sure, everyone has a unique viewpoint, but there is an organized and well-funded outfit furthering a specific set of priorities. RFK Jr's $497,000 salary came from somewhere.

Benjamin Mazer @mazer.us · 08/02/2026
Good morning. The goal of the anti-vaccine movement is not “medical freedom.” That’s just a lie. They literally want to ban vaccines. RFK Jr & allies have filed legal requests for the government to take shots for Covid, polio, and hepatitis B off the market so you have no choice.

I treated children for rotavirus in Denmark. The Danish vaccine schedule is no model for the U.S.
In Denmark, pediatrician Michael Thwing once saw nearly 20 infants admitted simultaneously with rotavirus. His experience in the U.S. has been completely different.

“Peter Duesberg was not “wrong” about HIV and AIDS, he was politically incorrect about it” That’s just the tip of the iceberg of RFK Jr’s praise of the notorious AIDS denialist who died this week. Kennedy himself doesn’t think HIV causes AIDS. Our NIH Director called this view“eccentric.”

I've seen this so many times: No one hates free speech more than a senior academic who is facing criticism. You don't get to decide where criticism appears. Newspapers, blogs, twitter, all fine in their own ways. Every scandal isn't a media scandal.
