HUGE news!!! 💥 We’re incredibly honored to have earned Mayor Wilson’s endorsement. She ran to make Seattle a city that working people can afford to build good lives in, & that’s exactly our campaign’s vision too. Thank you for trusting us to be in the fight with you @mayorofseattle.bsky.social !

Trillionaires shouldn’t exist. & we shouldn’t be paying higher healthcare premiums to fund their tax breaks. Here are some things states like WA should consider to level the playing field & make the ultra-wealthy pay back into the communities that made them so wealthy in the first place. Wdyt?

Kind of feel like we especially don’t need fancy law explainers at the moment. “Can the president just take money when he wants?” A third grader could answer this. A Yale law prof is likelier to write the wrong answer so their 2L can work for Alito

This podcast both really captures what it feels like to be a young person who badly wants to be seen and taken seriously and “treated like an adult” and also paints a very clear picture of how vulnerable that makes young people to abuse.

Happy Gideon Day! I love being a public defender and I feel enormous gratitude for Clarence Gideon. I think a lot about how every public defense win for every one of our clients stems from this 5 page handwritten petition by an incarcerated person with an 8th grade education demanding more.

This poem lives rent free in my brain.
Diane Seuss - from frank: sonnets
I wish I still smoked so that I could sit outside in the dark and smoke rather than just sitting outside in the dark. I'm glad my parents smoked even if it gave me asthma. It was worth it to hear the roar of the match and watch them bring fire so close to their faces and from across the room or yard to see the lit end grow angry and then out of their mouth came a smoke dragon that climbed and swelled in the air. I'm about to be poor. I'll live as my mother has lived. Dish soap and dryer sheets and birdseed and greeting cards from the dollar store. Yet not being a tightwad.
She's like Jesus with the loaves, always a few bucks to slip into somebody's hand but never the collection plate. Unlike Shirl who held so long to a penny that it turned green in her hands. In this way, I don't need a Bible. The parables are there like the free cigarettes tobacco companies handed out to patients in mental institution.

It's your birthday, Duane.
Duane Kearns Puryear, holding his panel for the AIDS Memorial Quilt. It reads, in block letters: "My name is Duane Kearns Puryear. I was born on December 20, 1964. I was diagnosed with AIDS on September 7, 1987 at 4:45 PM. I was 22 old. Sometimes, it makes me very sad. I made this panel myself. If you are reading it, I am dead..."

There are several great resources to learn about Duane, his advocacy, his family, his panel, and the politics of memory and re-creation, especially this one by The Dallas Way: http://www.thedallasway.org/stories/written/2021/9/19/duane-puryears-and-the-quilt-panel

Duane Puryear died in 1991.

I think all cars should come with ignition interlock devices installed, the same way seatbelts and airbags are. They don’t need to be punishment or surveillance, we could just make all cars not turn on if you’re drunk.

One of my favorite ways to study for finals in law school was to put recorded classes on 1.5x speed and go for a jog while I listened. Both for classes that I paid attention to and classes I doodled through. I don’t know why, things just stick better for me when my body is moving.

The WA Supreme Court has recognized (implicitly in a court rule) that excusing jurors based on distrust of law enforcement is a way to keep people of color off of juries. This is similar.

Transportation costs are the second largest burden on American family budgets (17%), after housing (33%)! To address the affordability crisis, we must create cities with abundant housing of all types (subsidized, social, coop, market rate) and make walking, biking, and taking transit convenient.

🚗 $1,025/month 🚌🚈⛴️ $108/month 🔋🚲 $135-175/month 👟 $???/month We should make the most affordable transportation options easy and convenient for people to use. Instead many American cities are designed so that driving is the only reasonable option.
