These farm workers are not criminals. These are hard-working, long term members of our communities, being unlawfully and violently targeted simply for looking Latino and working class. The reckless and chaotic tactics being used are a danger to public safety and in clear violation of the law.

And restaurants are not the only sector, of course. Seems like employer premiums would ideally be calculated on net profits, with some who may not pay at all.

This simplified approach seems to have the best outcomes overall. However, I wonder how employers not offering health care benefits now would be able to pay for it. In restaurants, for instance, most don’t offer it and are making a less than 1% margin (or are in the red). How do you solve for them?

Certainly housing, but also farmland, which is how we feed ourselves. (In King County, farmland is 8-10x more expensive than national average, totally unviable.) Also commercial real estate, which underpins small business viability. It cuts across everything.

mayaeyah.bsky.social @mayaeyah.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
I would argue that this goes beyond housing. Land/ real estate as an investment vehicle has led profit to be the only determinant of land use, which is a very poor way to allocate such a vital resource in society.

THE WORK. I recently read @ositanwanevu.com The Right of the People, which made such a great case for our need for a new Founding. Particularly appreciated the focus on economic democracy as well as political. Especially resonant when appeals to the Constitution still come up short.
Black text on white, quote from article: “True as all this may be, societies have never been remade by the restatement of grievances alone. Those who seek change on the scale we deserve and hope for are obliged to offer the American people a particular understanding of human life, what human beings are entitled to, and, divisive and contestable as they may be, strong ideas about what specific political, social, and economic arrangements are best suited to the preservation of human life, liberty, and happiness.”

In addition to stories from people who worked hard their whole lives only to fall into insurmountable debt, you'll also hear from formerly homeless folks like Keith, who managed to turn things around despite the odds—but now faces the prospect of losing the housing he fought so hard to regain.
Keith, 35, in South Carolina, says he attempted suicide in 2023 after a long battle with alcoholism. He recounts how he survived jumping off a bridge but broke his back. After he received a spinal fusion, he found it difficult to work or do much of anything physical because of his injury, and finally he wound up homeless. He took to sleeping in the woods outside a hospital where he says he regularly sought assistance. “I was just staying there, like trying to get into the mental health department or something like that,” Keith says. “They would just turn you away.”

Later, Keith says, he secured a spot at a local Salvation Army shelter, found a job at a gas station, and in January made the transition into a studio apartment, staying sober and “building something that resembled a normal life,” he says. Yet lately he has started to worry that he’s “watching years of progress disappear in slow motion.” A succession of restaurant jobs, including dishwashing and prep work, have proven impossible with his back problem, and he has avoided further medical treatment for fear of the cost. Now he expects to be evicted, and he’s dreading a return to an unhoused existence.

Remove the middle turning lane that no one uses. Add bike lane and slim green strip on either side of the road. You get sidewalk, bike lane, green strip separator, bus lane, car lane.

I work for a nonprofit that supported the bill in favor of the makers district. It’s not wholly industrial land, it’s the stadium district so very much trafficked by lots of people regularly. Also near a light rail stop, which is exactly the kind of place we should be building housing.

Peacefull Observers

To Our Beloved Guardian Angels,

In these times of profound trial, when darkness sought to engulf our community, you emerged as beacons of unwavering light. When fear gripped our hearts and the very fabric of our existence trembled under the shadow of masked agents-when we were hunted, chased, and made to feel as strangers in the place we call home- you stood tall. You stood with us.

With courage that defied the chill of winter winds and compassion that warmed the coldest nights, you became our shield. You left the comfort of your daily lives, your workplaces, your routines, to stand guard at our doors. You brought us the gift of warning-the loud sirens that pierced the silence of impending danger, giving us precious moments to seek shelter, to protect our children, to preserve our dignity.

You did not merely observe; you acted. You confronted hatred face-to-face. You stood between us and the agents of fear, becoming the voice for the voiceless, the strength for the weary, and the hope for the hopeless. In your presence, we found sanctuary. In your resolve, we found resilience.

Your bravery is a testament to the boundless capacity of the human spirit. You stood against the tides of xenophobia, Islamophobia, and every form of prejudice that seeks to divide humanity.
You embodied the highest ideals of human dignity, honor, and solidarity. You reminded us-and the world-that America's true strength lies in its embrace of those who seek refuge, its promise of freedom, and its unwavering stand for justice.

Your sacrifice will echo through generations. We will tell our children, and they will tell theirs, of the guardian angels who stood tall when hate knocked at our doors. Your legacy is etched in the heart of our community-a living history of compassion without limits, courage without borders.

(Alt text continues on second picture, because Bluesky has a 2000 character limit on alt text for some reason) You are the reason hope still shines. You are the reason America remains a home for the persecuted, a land where freedom rings true. We love you. We honor you. We will never forget what you have done.

May God bless you, protect you, and keep you close. Your light will forever guide us.

With Eternal Gratitude, The Community You Saved

Great to hear. I would also be interested to know if the King County Executive or Council is interested in pursuing this, given the executive orders that came down this week. It seems helpful to cover a larger area all at once, but I don’t know whether that’s possible.

Thanks for your reporting on this. Am I reading this incorrectly somehow, or did you say the interline option would close Line 1 for three years?? That feels like a non-starter.
But it comes with big impacts to the existing system as well, including an estimated three-year closure of the existing 1 Line to shore up the existing tunnels, excavate the new one, and install and test the new systems.
