Whether or not this actually stops the AI mashups is irrelevant, because consumer rights still get slashed in the process. Additionally, fully above board decompiles may get caught up in it as well. All of these potentially terrible outcomes because people didn’t want to learn how to do it.

However now, companies have a strong argument to takedown this stuff because it IS directly accessing code and files which are intentionally inaccessible. Additionally, more companies will start giving consumers less actual files with a preference for cloud based gaming.

The reason communities have gotten away with this for the longest time is because companies know they can’t exactly make a strong argument for a takedown. It’s not something being sold, and sometimes still require the original games (Mario Kart Wiicompiled being a prime example)

These mashups decomp games on the fly. Except for the fact that it’s not a decomp in the traditional sense. It is still using and accessing copyrighted files, unlike community decomps which are the original games taken apart and then remade using ORIGINAL code. This, while not tested, is legal rn

I think their AI point is based on the distinction between Gen AI like ChatGPT and AI used in research. AI in medical research is actually incredibly helpful and powerful, allowing scientists to more quickly identify potential solutions to previously incurable diseases.

My one complaint with Octopath, and it’s the whole reason I haven’t played the second, is that it’s just such a time sink. So it’s not even a real complaint, I just can’t dedicate the time to it. I still haven’t beaten the true final boss of the first one because that grind is insane.
