At the tenth anniversary of the doulas who helped us with kiddo being born. Hard to overstate how helpful they were. I wish more people knew what doulas do and could take advantage of the option.

It's official, I passed 1K hours in Stardew this week!

So next week is a big deal for me, for a few reasons. One of those is that it's the first anniversary of me starting streaming! To celebrate, I'm committing to doing a bunch of extra streaming this next week as I work toward affiliate. www.twitch.tv/maxlsilver #twitch #streaming #subtember

"Golden" is the one I share with folks who haven't seen the movie, but "What It Sounds Like" is definitely my favorite..

Scene from KPop Demon Hunters. Someone is looking at a video on their phone of three twenty-something men crying with joy (presumably over listening to HUNTR/X). See also me when listening to "What It Sounds Like"

Hey, a bunch of cool Stardew folks, including @salmence.bsky.social @junimob.bsky.social are doing a fun thing tomorrow afternoon on @trianthania.bsky.social 's channel. You should go check them out. (I'd share Lummi's handle but not sure if she's on BSky)

I've really enjoyed playing Death's Door. So much that I've streamed my second playthrough on Twitch. I've also taken to exporting the streams to YT so I have a copy. And I gotta say, this game, in particular, really lends itself to thumbnails. 😄

Screenshot of a YouTube thumbail. Image is from the game Death's Door at the beginning of the fight with the Frog King. The king towers over the little reaper crow and the text "KING OF THE SWAMP" is stamped over the top. My little Max.png sits in the lower left.

Spent the weekend down at Lake Cumberland, playing games with friends at the lodge lounge. It was good; first time I've travelled solo in a couple of years. A bit wet, but glad to see folks.

Picture of the incoming rain, from the lodge. Was impressive to watch it march across the lake.

View of my room's balcony, at the Lake Cumberland lodge. You can see a couple of metal work chairs and a small table with the ashtray. Past the balcony, you can see the lake and the distant shore.

Skipping stream tonight. We had a new friend join us here at the Silver home and he's still getting settled in. May do something late night or in the morning if I'm able.

Received new stuff from @howardtayler.bsky.social and @sandratayler.bsky.social today. Some good looking books. And important reference material!

A copy of the hardbound "Seventy Maxims of Maximally Effective Mercenaries" along with a copy of the Schlock Mercenary compilation "Mandatory Failure". Also include is a handy pocket reference for the Maxims, for on the go!

Just got my print copy of @zachweinersmith.bsky.social 's The Universe: Abridged Beyond the Point of Usefulness. Have to say, the book looks very nice. And the intro reads like something Douglas Adams would have approved of.

Small black book titled "The Universe: Abridged Beyond the Point of Usefulness" sitting on a desk with a Reading Rainbow coffee mug and computer keyboard presented for scale. Or more that I just didn't bother moving them.

No real surprises here. Those achievements are a little goofed though...over half of them are because I finally imported my web save of Cookie Clicker over to the Steam version. But almost half of my playtime being Stardew, and the biggest months being March and April are entirely expected.

Steam Replay 2024 for me (I've hid my Steam user name because I'm not sharing that here). 37 Games Played, 860 Achievements (sorta), 668 Sessions, 21 New Games

Most played games: Stardew Valley (45%), Rusty's Retirement (13%), Spirit City: Lofi Sessions (10%), Cookie Clicker (7%), Little-known Galaxy (4%)

It's always a little wild to have thunderstorms in December. Yard is completely filled with leaves again, but our stubborn pin oak is still holding on to as many as it can.

Our front yard, covered in fallen pin oak leaves and pools of water from the heavy rain. Pin oak can be seen in the top right, still holding on to even more leaves, the jerk. Neighbor houses in background, with some homemade Christmas decorations.

Despite the whole house having colds this weekend, we did a good start on getting the tree, wreath and stockings up. Ornaments will have to wait for tomorrow.

I had to look up the name, but the very first thing I remember watching was The Daily Drop, then Unskippable. And then I found out you all did full on sketch comedy and I was hooked.

So with the big uptick of people joining over here, combined with _gestures_, I found myself starting to doomscroll again for the first time in a few years. Feeds help me a lot when that starts happening. You can pin feeds that you want to check regularly...I pick ones that help me recenter.

I thought it was interesting to see these two posts right next to each other. I don't pretend to know the answer. Would the Twitch or YouTube model (subs/members plus ads) scale? But a lot of CCs seem to depend more on Patreon..but whales don't seem any better than ads at scale...

Two Bsky skeets next to each other
Technology Connections @techconnectify.bsky.social
And that's what I'm railing against - if paywalls are the only way you can think of to fund journalism, then you're going to perpetuate this world where good faith actors are battling influencers on social media peddling whatever new crap is on the market. We need an exit from that now.
(new quote post next in timeline)
Iron Spike @ironspike.bsky.social
Been saying this for awhile, honestly. The future for uncompromised, user-prioritized online platforms is inevitably paywalls. Advertising-driven monetization ruins every platform it touches.
(quoted post follows)
Hank Green @hankgreen.bsky.social
How do we all feel about the possibility that the long-term viability of a platform like this remaining not crappy would require many of us to pay a small monthly fee.

Just to second this. I have friends who got relatively lucky but are still waiting for infrastructure to get restored. They just sent a picture of going to get water from a portable filter station.

Also, I realized trying to think of albums that I just really don't listen to whole albums any more, for better and for worse. This is what YouTube thinks I'd want to listen to right now. There's definitely some good choices on there but some I don't recognize by sight? So YMMV.
