greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 02/10/2026A video game you play on a single screen with other people in the room with you. 100
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 12/09/2026As the publisher of Root, a game I have a lot of experience teaching and has somewhat the same issue with new players because of the aesthetics, how do you bridge that gap within the design, before publishing, and how do you manage those expectations for players earlier in their experience? 100
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 12/09/2026Context: I have a game I've been working on, a mid-heavy game that consistently has the first impression that it's going to be much lighter than it is because of the small size of the game (it's just a deck of cards and each player has a pawn and a limited number of tokens) My question: 100
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 30/08/2026My daughter was designing her own rules for High Tide, so naturally, I lost. 010
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 22/06/2026"It's complicated" is definitely where I land with it. Most of the time I don't even start with a theme or a mechanism, but almost like a place setting for the components on the table and think of what I want the players to feel or do before I think of mechanisms or theme. 010
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 22/06/2026Origins was a great time, but super exhausting! Glad to be back home. Thanks to everyone who came out to play Pirates of Port Royal! 000
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 17/06/2026Have a good convention! Highly recommend Wario's if you're looking for a local sandwich place for lunch. It's about a block away from the convention center. 010
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 16/06/2026YARR! Let's play Pirates of Port Royal at Origins! I'll be in the Unpub Room at 5:00PM this Friday, and 1:30 PM this Saturday, at the Convention Center in Columbus Ohio! 100
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 06/06/2026Being genuine might be unc but I'd rather be lame than acting. 010
Reposted by gregceej @ceej.online · 05/06/2026Am I “unc?” I don’t know, is it “unc” to relish a sunset? Is it “unc” to see the world renewed in the peal of a child’s laughter? To stand still in the ebb of a river of time and grin at the rushing parr with the wisdom of eternity? To rhyme a wilting flower with the universe? Is that “unc?” 271007136
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 04/06/2026I'll be at Origins this year with a prototype of Pirates of Port Royal 000
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 15/05/2026Maybe it's the minimalist in me, but the bigger I make my games, the less I find myself "adding" from the initial plan. I'm far more likely to entertain adding stuff when the core loop/systems are more constrained because of that cascading effect of each system's individual bloat. 010
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 15/05/2026The irony of larger games in my experience is that your first prototype is almost always going to be the "biggest" because that's when your ideas are generally at their grandest and most expansive. From there, you're almost always simplifying down from everything else. 110
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 15/05/2026I think the issue with "big games" causing big messes has more to do with how every interlocking system is susceptible to the same kind of bloat smaller systems are, but simply because there are so many more of them, those small things cascade out. 110
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 07/04/2026You can play Pirates of Port Royal at Origins at the Unpub room Friday night and Saturday afternoon 000
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 02/04/2026If you've never been, the German Village is a little trek, but it's got some of my favorite spots in the city, Thurman Cafe, Schmidt's, and Valters at the Mannerchoir. 010
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 02/04/2026The food at the North Market is good, but you don't need to walk very far to get much better food. 110
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 02/04/2026Columbus has some great burgers, but if you're at origins, Wario's is the best sandwich nearby and it's in walking distance of the convention center. 110
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 23/03/2026I work in software, there's a ridiculous number of great, insightful talks and tutorials that are frankly difficult to watch because public speaking is hard too, even if you're an expert in your field. 010
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 23/03/2026This is a pretty common issue in any discipline because the skills to make something aren't necessarily transferrable to other disciplines. It's just a different set of skills to make engaging videos than it is to excel in a craft. 110

greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 20/03/2026It's weird to see the criticism of SU&SD's top 100 games of all time giving a middling review for Last Will because I always took the series idea to be a tongue in cheek title for a "look back at classic games people love" rather than a literal ranking of the 100 best games ever. 001
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 20/03/2026It would cost almost nothing to produce for real, but making multiple books takes so much more effort and money than it does to get them printed professionally. 000
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 20/03/2026This newest weird prototype cost $43 to make one copy out of office supplies, and I'm really excited for this one. 110
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 19/03/2026I might have accidentally started my most ambitious game design ever. 000
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 18/03/2026Sounds contradictory, but a tree fell on my house a few days ago, and nobody was hurt, the only damage I've seen so far was to an outdoor chair, a couple of boards came off my fence, and my gutter got a ding in it. I'm usually pretty cynical, so it's weird a fallen tree has made my week. 110
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 10/03/2026Pretty sure I played this a few years ago at Protospiel Cleveland and had a great time with it. Definitely recommend people check this one out! www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mwzk...youtube.comKebab Review: Quick Take with Tom VaselYouTube video by The Dice Tower 000
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 23/02/2026@gmtgames.bsky.social Hi, I have a few P500 orders that I ordered from my old address, but I've since moved, is changing my address in the addresses tab enough to get these to ship to the correct address when they are ready or do I need to do more for them? 000
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 13/02/2026I'm actually working on a game that has a similar issue to Arcs, given the interconnectedness of the mechanisms, any general advice on how to lay out information when it's interdependent on other systems? A lot of the time it feels like trying to pick the best way to orient the attached picture: 100
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 13/02/2026I agree in the sense that it's not an inherent good, but it's also just generally good advice, albeit a little lazy. 010
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 13/02/2026Question for you: Is this why your games generally have "first game" tutorials the way they do, with a rolling teach? My view is that it's both easy criticism to say "simplify" when something is misunderstood, and it's easy for designers to initially make something more complex than it needs to be. 100
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 13/02/2026I think it goes both ways, it's easier to make something more complicated than it needs to be than the inverse, and telling people to "simplify" is also an easy catch all criticism when something doesn't gel. I also don't think what Cole is saying is really oppositional to what Eric is saying. 100
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 13/02/2026That said, I do think designers generally overvalue "simplify" as a catch all criticism for any game that they don't immediately understand or prove expertise with. It's easy to say "this is hard to understand, simplify it" rather than asking "how can I teach this complex thing to people". 000
greg @maximpactgames.bsky.social · 13/02/2026It isn't to say that you shouldn't make complex games, rather that games naturally trend towards complexity because of a lack of thought around why you are making certain decisions or designing out of exceptions that arise from iterating on the same underlying system. 100
