It is also true that we are at serious risk of losing our leadership in biomedical R&D, and this is very clearly a regulatory limitation. If we take 10+ years and $1B+ to bring a drug to market while others can do it in 3 years and $50M, then we will simply no longer be relevant resulting in layoffs

This conflates two separate effects: America remains far and away the #1 destination for people from the third world. They are coming here to escape exploitation! Can capitalism still be tough? Yes. For them, America is a dramatically positive innovation, even with the drawbacks! Simultaneously,

I see, no, I fully agree that there are serious market failures in naive capitalism and additional regulatory structure is needed. We are aligned on this

This is obviously not true as a general case, and I think you know that. This kind of rhetoric is extremely corrosive though, and has led to famines and violence for hundreds of millions of people historically. On the other hand, America continues to be a global sink of talent, acceleratingly so

Successful American entrepreneurs capture a very small percent of the overall wealth created by their endeavors. The mistake is viewing the world as zero sum: it is completely legitimate to create lots of new value that did not exist before for people and in exchange privatize a small part of that.

Capitalism is Great, Actually. Things we take for granted as basic as keeping groceries stores stocked is actually very hard! almost no mechanism other than markets is capable of doing it! These social attractors are incredibly dangerous and will cause you to fall far short of your potential

this mindset is so incredibly wrong it’s tough to know where to start. this idea is true of systems *other* than capitalism! allowing markets to do price discovery and engaging in voluntary transactions because it works for you is arguably *a central innovation of capitalism* over the prior systems!

i strongly support more public funding for basic research. i do think there's now a significant technological overhang in terms of what's possible vs what we're actually doing which is regulatory... but both of these things are critical

If you gave a tool calling LLM the ability to send an email and it uses true knowledge it has to extort you I think you’d consider that a threat. This is a totally practical risk give how these models are getting deployed now.

the books don’t form a single narrative, they’re all different stories set in the same overall universe. By the “first book” I assume you mean Consider Phlebas; you might find Player of Games better, or maybe Surface Detail or Excession. All very different stories.

me and others often talk about a "bright future" on the horizon that is attainable, but that can feel pretty vague. in practical terms, the vision of the Culture I think captures it best we may be much closer than most people think youtu.be/peSPZnFR_bI

I wish there was a way to have an LLM propose Zotero collection organization for me to accept or reject, or add a Cursor-like chat drawer running PaperQA2 on the local library directly in the UI. Lots of opportunities here!
