I don’t like to inquire into the fascist mindset because there are enough abysses to stare into, thanks, but AfD appear to be seeking territory not just from Belgium, Switzerland and France but also … Łódź? And Transylvania? Why not Rīga and Tallinn, or indeed Namibia at that rate?
![[11:05, 25/07/2026] Liam Bright: So basically I think the film leans into Odysseus as the first of the moderns, more secular in his reasoning than most around him and even has it that by his actions the ancient system of personalised duty and responsibility is brought down to be replaced by a system of grasping self interest
[11:07, 25/07/2026] Liam Bright: Since Nolan shares with Adorno and Horkheimer a fundamentally romantic conservative sensibility this is treated as something to be mourned, the initiation of a self destructive way of being that civilisation cannot sustain
[11:08, 25/07/2026] Liam Bright: So yeah I think it was the Dialectic of Enlightenment read on Odysseus.
[11:11, 25/07/2026] Liam Bright: What it lacked is a real emphasis on Odysseus himself as tricksy and grasping, he doesn't revel in being a clever lad getting his way in the world - he does his tricks a little bit but largely when forced into it by circumstance and is mournful about what this means rather than joyously revelling in his gains. But that's because he's a leading man in a Nolan film, which means he has to be a very sad boy in a somewhat emotionally cold world whose decisions have negative consequences for women without that ever quite being the focus. That's a real difference and very much Nolan having his schtick rather than just embracing the first of the moderns read. So I don't think the overlap is perfect, just enough to be there.](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:iq6aw4tscf5n5oplggiyjfyl/bafkreidfavem7572k5oek6b3zkejpd5vdlhckj5fe75j4iad3ve624h6ci)
