And I’m not saying PR is perfect and certainly overindulges on critiques. But at the end of it, I actually felt something. I felt the winner could be a huge star. That means something. 000

And so losing doesn’t really matter either I think it’s partly that the BBC sets the culture (and they are prize averse) but also the wider British attitude that being overly competitive is gauche 100

But as someone that works in this genre, it interests me how the “cosy-fication” of competitive formats is largely a UK (and to a lesser extent some Northern European countries) thing. Bake Off is a big hit in the US. But it doesn’t mean every show has been Bake-Off-ified. 111
