To do that, you have to restrict the territory to an area where Palestinians are a large majority. That is the basis of the 2-state solution. The resolution however calls for one state from the river to the sea. That would have a Jewish majority.

But if one defines “Palestinian” simply as “people who live in the territory of the former British Palestine” and most of the people who meet that definition are Israeli Jews, then we can no longer talk sensibly about any of this

This argument is OK. But if one calls the Zionist one racist and supports the Palestinian one, that is antisemitic.

Matt Steinglass @mattsteinglass.bsky.social · 18m
The argument that a Palestinian state wth right of return for Palestinians could be an egalitarian liberal democracy with equal rights for Jewish citizens is exactly the same as the argument that a Zionist state could be an egalitarian liberal democracy with equal rights for Arab citizens.

For the same reason, pre-1967-borders Israel is not a state that fulfills “the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination” even though it has over a million Palestinian citizens.

Matt Steinglass @mattsteinglass.bsky.social · 27m
It doesn’t have to. But today “the Palestinian people” refers to Palestinian Arabs and their descendants abroad. So a state that embodies “the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination” can’t be one from the river to the sea with a Jewish majority, unless it is an ethnostate.

As I have asked before: who would vote in this imagined referendum on the right of return for Palestinians?

It is OK to think that neither people has such a right. But that is not what the Green resolution says.

Matt Steinglass @mattsteinglass.bsky.social · 8h
Zionism is the belief that the Jewish people have a right to self-determination in Israel. If you think the Palestinian people have a right to self-determination in Palestine, but the Jewish people don’t have the equivalent right, that is antisemitic.

Matt Steinglass @mattsteinglass.bsky.social · 8h
Hence a state embodying “the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination” could not be a state from the river to the sea with equal rights for its Jewish majority. If you think a Zionist state is by nature an ethnostate, then the state envisioned here is also an ethnostate.

In “the Palestinian people's inalienable right to self-determination, including the right of the Palestinian people to resistance and liberation from Israeli occupation”, it is obvious that “the Palestinian people” do not include Israeli Jews.

“invading one's neighbor and massacring its citizens without provocation”, ie what Russia did in Ukraine starting in 2022. “Bombing one’s neighbor in retaliation” after a massacre, ie what Israel did in Gaza from Oct 8-18 2023 when this was posted.

Nina, you seem to be misreading the post, as you may see if you read it again. That said, everything is a response to everything, but Oct 7 was an inexcusable orgy of organized murder. There is no reason to make any excuses for it, it accomplishes nothing.

What advice do we have for Marine Le Pen who protests that the press “demonizes” her?
010
Matt Steinglass @mattsteinglass.bsky.social · 19h
No. And Israeli Jews are not Palestinians, so calling for Palestinian national self-determination is only morally acceptable in a 2-state solution, not a 1-state one. Read threads! Avoid context collapse!

Matt Steinglass @mattsteinglass.bsky.social · 22h
No, youre making a series of assumptions that are not part of what I wrote. I support the coming into existence of a Palestinian state. I am also very skeptical about the likelihood that it would treat Jews equally. That’s an acceptable part of the bargain.
110
Matt Steinglass @mattsteinglass.bsky.social · 22h
It is also not at all uncontroversial that Israel exercises such rights over Palestinians in the occupied territories.
000
Matt Steinglass @mattsteinglass.bsky.social · 22h
I’m not quite clear what you mean. Do you mean that Palestinian restrictions on Jewish residency in a Palestinian state in West Bank/Gaza are taken as unacceptable by liberal 2-state advocates? I don’t think that’s true.
110
Matt Steinglass @mattsteinglass.bsky.social · 22h
It would be lovely. But I would put myself in the position of an Arendt and say: please join the real world. Near the top of the agenda of a newly born Palestinian state will be payback for what the Israelis have done to its people over the last 80 years. By popular demand. This is just politics.
120
Matt Steinglass @mattsteinglass.bsky.social · 22h
On the third hand, making the same kind of argument: if you think a Palestinian state is going to treat Jewish citizens equally, I have a bridge over the Jordan to sell you.
3110
Matt Steinglass @mattsteinglass.bsky.social · 22h
But there is a stronger version of the “Zionism is racism” argument based on see-we-told-you-so. That is, we said from the start (see Arendt) that by nature this kind of project is going to turn into a herrenvolk democracy ethnostate, and look, it did. That’s a powerful argument.

Matt Steinglass @mattsteinglass.bsky.social · 23h
I think it necessarily implies inequality around residency and citizenship rights for Jewish v non-Jewish immigrants. But a 1990s liberal vision of Israel would entail a tolerable level of inequality not that dissimilar from lots of other states.

Agree re the de facto Israeli policy. But what makes the Green motion immoral and antisemitic, not just unworkable, is that it defines Zionism as racism but embraces the “national self-determination of the Palestinian people”. National self-determination can’t just be for one of the two peoples.
100
Matt Steinglass @mattsteinglass.bsky.social · 23h
I think pre-1948 Zionists also argued that the Jews had a right to a nation “like other peoples”, not above others. Maybe partition would have been doable in the 30s but the Brits weren’t ready to leave and the Palestinians wouldn’t have accepted it.

“Israeli” is not a religion either. There are Israelis of all religions, including Muslims, Christians, Bahai, the somewhat recondite Druze religious practice, and Thai Buddhists; I don’t think there are any Thai-Palestinians. Hope that helps!
100
Matt Steinglass @mattsteinglass.bsky.social · 23h
What is not coherent, and becomes racist and fascist, is a 1-state solution based on national self-determination for only one of the two peoples. That is what the Green motion embraces, in its ignorance and student-leftist enthusiasm.
2120
Matt Steinglass @mattsteinglass.bsky.social · 23h
Since Israel recognized the PLO there has been a choice: either a 2-state solution based on national self-determination for the Israeli and Palestinian peoples, or a 1-state solution based on individual citizenship with no reference to ethnic origin. Each is philosophically coherent.

Matt Steinglass @mattsteinglass.bsky.social · 23h
Palestinians are a nation. National self-consciousness sprouted in the late 1800s and took hold during the Revolt of 1936-39. Israelis denied this for decades, referring to them as “Arabs”. That didn’t work: the PLO and its popular roots acted independently, proving they were a distinct people.

Nations are fluid and hard to define things but they are real. “Imagined Communities” as Anderson puts it, formed by social commonalities and ties and the belief of their members that they belong to that community. It won’t work to pretend they don’t exist: they will act and prove you wrong.

Matt Steinglass @mattsteinglass.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I have no problem with your political philosophy. It’s not fit for purpose for this situation but it’s not immoral. But it won’t work to use words in ways that nobody really uses them. Your definition of “Palestinian” includes Jewish settlers in the West Bank. That doesn’t work.

Peter, come on. What are Palestinians if not an ethnic group? Are my Israeli cousins who served in the IDF “Palestinians”? Of course not. The Greens obviously do not mean to refer to them as “Palestinians”. They mean Arabs living in Israel/Palestine or who trace their ancestry back there.

Of course it is different because our version is generally not motivated by frustrated sexual desire for us as Jews. And it is in various ways unlike the versions experienced by brown-skinned people encountering white folks furiously proving they are NOT RACIST. But they are analogous.

Matt Steinglass @mattsteinglass.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
The point here is that to say as the Greens do simultaneously that the Palestinians are a people deserving of their own state, but the Jews are not a people or do not deserve their own state (viz “Zionism is racism”), is antisemitic.
160
Matt Steinglass @mattsteinglass.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Again, that is a defensible worldview (though an otherworldly utopian one since the vast majority of people consider themselves to belong to a people and/or nation). But it cannot be reconciled with “self-determination of the Palestinian people”. You are saying that the Green motion above is wrong.

Britain is a perfectly lovely country and Scots enjoy a great deal of autonomy. But autonomy is not self-determination. In some cases peoples may not need self-determination. But it is a Wilsonian vision in which nations each have their own state.

Matt Steinglass @mattsteinglass.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Similarly, the Netherlands does not as such fulfill the “self-determination” of the Frisian people, Britain does not as such fulfill the “self-determination” of the Scottish people etc.

Matt Steinglass @mattsteinglass.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Because if it covers all of the territory from the river to the sea, and has no ethnic preference, it would be a majority Jewish country and could not fulfill Palestinian “self-determination” as a people.

Another country that is in many ways quite similar to Israel is a country representing a people many don’t consider a nation, conquered and persecuted and largely dispersed into exile, who now desire a right of return to their ancestral territory. It is called Palestine

Matt Steinglass @mattsteinglass.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Should that territory be Azerbaijan? Azerbaijan never even existed until 1918. What is its claim to sovereignty over that territory? Why is it even a country? Isn’t it just an artificial creation of the Soviets who launched it as an ethnically defined SSR?
