Sometimes I understand why people find conspiracy theories tempting. The tallest building on the north side of Amsterdam, built as a Maritim Hotel 3 years ago, never opened. It is finished but Maritim has pulled out. Directly across from Central Station.

The Trump-Putin diesel “deal” reminds me of the Ukraine rare-earths/mineral resources “deal” as initially floated in February 2025. Neither makes any commercial or economic sense; they seem driven by what could be sold to Trump as “getting some [x]”. www.ft.com/content/84ca...

They seem to have a view that a word can’t describe a religion and also be a broader philosophical term. It’s a black and white view of language, one might almost call it

The Greens declare that Zionism, the movement of national self-determination of the Jewish people, is racism because such a state favors one ethnicity over another. Two secs later, it declares support for the national self-determination of the Palestinian people. This is stupid and antisemitic.

Eric Schmitt’s conspiracy theory, slander and b-ball ignorance yesterday was humiliating. But also remember who he is: a natcon with a blood-and-soil belief that the only real Americans are descended from white Christians who immigrated before the mid-1800s. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

So annoying when people just put things out on the sidewalk and expect Amsterdam Gemeente to pick it up. Those belong in the Volkswagen receptacle

The interviews for this piece took place back in late July and early August. DC was sweltering, the Reflecting Pool was a fenced-off tarpaulin and the National Guard was everywhere.

What issues most concerned voters in Mecklenbur-Vorpommern, where the AfD finished first? Exit polls find the top 5 were: prices and wages; education; the economy; jobs; infrastructure; (stopping) right-wing extremism. Immigration, Islam, Europe? Not in the top 5. www.zeit.de/politik/deut...

It seems Sweden Democrats awakening "den björn" here refers not to the ABBA songs that were performed at Social Democrat rallies but to having "woken the bear" by turning out large numbers of immigrant voters to stop them.

The excellent @mathijsbouman.nl argues that Ruben Brekelmans is wrong: young Dutch are working full time more than EU peers or their elders. Is this true? Certainly Dutch in general work part time more than others; OECD doesn’t supply 25-35yo but this is hours worked at main job for 25-54yo:

This is interesting in that the actual flat mid-Atlantic accent of most people in New Jersey has nothing to do with the "Noo Joizy" of legend. And my DC accent is not a Bal'mur Murlan drawl. A region's most distinctive accent is often not its most common accent

Anyone with any acumen can read this final frame as a woeful but defiant Palestinian prisoner condemning Israel's attempts to eliminate his nation. "We promised to end [their] existence." "Yet we existed." Just a mirror of Zionism's own founding myths. Insane lack of self-awareness.

What lesson is here for the rest of us? For Europe, it's simple. Putin is wrong that Western orcas eat Russian bears. But if he thinks everyone is trying to eat each other, he will act that way. Orcas and bears don't eat each other, but they do eat seals. Don't be seals. Be orcas. 11/11

Regarding “woke 1.0 was crazy”: remember the furore over NFL players et al taking a knee? I saw this at the Harvard Art Museums last month. It’s an SNCC poster from the 1960s. Civil Rights Movement 1.0, as it were. Maybe not so crazy

Fascinating that Adrian Vermeule, a Catholic convert, phrases his objections to legal originalism by referring disparagingly to Protestantism’s doctrine of “sola scriptura”
“In our world, originalism is quite often practiced as a disruptive method, an essentially Protestant method of hermeneutic that, taken to its logical extreme, invokes sola scriptura to unsettle doctrines long established in the law”

The Smithsonian I visited in 6th grade had an incredible exhibit called "A Nation of Nations" about how America's greatness was built out of mass immigration and racial and cultural diversity. This was over 40 years ago during the Reagan administration, not exactly woke www.ft.com/content/659a...

You may be surprised who the author of this fierce anti-originalism, anti-libertarian screed is (though not if you know the ins and outs of the debate)
“Originalist-libertarians purport to be horrified by purposive rule for the common good even as they defend the role of common-law judges in defining and protecting property rights. They evince hostility to the administrative state, except for the parts of the administrative state that promote the smooth functioning of financial services and the broader economy, and angrily condemn any departures from “the putative original understanding, except in areas such as political free speech rights for corporations, gun rights, and "takings" of property rights, in which the law propounded by conservative judges is either expressly or arguably non-originalist.”

My take is that I don’t think “represent” is the right word; I think the press should inform and stimulate, and it’s in citizens’ interest to have a press that does. If it’s not independent it can’t. You can tell which outlets are independent bc they don’t slavishly praise the government.
