James Dobson: 1936-2025
James Dobson, the founder of Focus on the Family and one of the most influential voices in the conservative evangelical movement over the past 50 years, has died at age 89.

Dobson promoted child abuse by convincing millions that hitting kids is the only way to effectively discipline them and that, when they cry in response, they are challenging parental authority so they should be hit again. His books to that effect were freely handed out at evangelical churches throughout my entire childhood. I had a lot of friends whose parents had them on their shelves and all of them. To a person they had pretty shitty and traumatic upbringings as a result.

Dobson blamed school shootings – Sandy Hook included – on LGBTQ+ people. He didn't say that gay people committed such crimes, of course. He said that their mere existence and society's even grudging acceptance of them displeased God and that God responded by slaughtering children. He further added that death from AIDS was God's way of punishing gay men for their wickedness.

Dobson viewed marriage as a transaction in which women exchange sex for protection and argued that that's exactly how it should be.

Dobson, railing against transgender women using women's bathrooms, once said that "if this had happened 100 years ago, someone might have been shot . . . Where is today's manhood? God help us!" This was widely, and I think correctly, interpreted as Dobson advocating for violence against transgender women.

If there is a hell, Dobson is burning in it right now. If there is not, I hope that, at the very least, his death was painful, protracted, and humiliating and that the last thing of which he was conscious before it all went black was the dark oblivion that awaited him.
