Divided thoughts --- a one-presentation limit should keep room on the agenda for new voices. Makes sense. ...but choosing the presenter at time of submission? Seems like this virtually guarantees many will retract work after acceptance, as they've hedged their bets with multiple submissions.

Checked this against the last Bieber log entry (April 23) and found the count is 49 days off. Which means either the log is miscalibrated or (more likely) that this is actually a running total of non-Bieber days, and that you spent 49 days with him so far this year.

You can beef up the denominator (and thus extend your youth) by counting physical therapy expenses as a delayed cost of eating takeout, which I think is fair

After six months of navigating immigration, media requests, and new funding schemes, my wife and I spent last week hiking through the mountains of Georgia’s remote Tusheti region. Ancient, atmospheric, and vast — exactly the sort of reset a busy mind needs.

It’s truly astonishing to see how comprehensively the US government is tearing down every part of the system that has made it up until now a world-leading power in science, research, and technological development. The entire world will suffer from this wanton destruction.

My MS thesis involved comics, and I had the opportunity to present it in Lent’s group at IAMCR. He was such an intellectually generous leader of that group — and such a warm presence in the room. Can’t imagine a better representative for the academic study of comic art — a gentle titan.

This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again. www.nature.com/immersive/d4...
This line graph illustrates the percentage change in agency staff levels from the previous year for nine major U.S. federal scientific and health organizations between the fiscal years 2016 and 2025. The agencies tracked include the CDC, Department of Energy, EPA, FDA, NASA, NIH, NIST, NOAA, and NSF. For the majority of the timeline between 2016 and 2023, the agencies show relatively stable fluctuations, generally staying within a range of +5% to -5% change per year. However, there is a dramatic and uniform plummet starting in the 2024–25 period. Every agency depicted shows a sharp downward trajectory, with staffing losses ranging from approximately -15% to over -25%. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows the most significant decline, dropping to roughly -26%, while the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) shows the least severe but still substantial drop at approximately -15%.

Humbly suggest this is for the same reason (I suspect) that some local papers cover the chamber of commerce so closely — editors need content and any news announced via press release is low-hanging fruit

Matt Minich @mattminich.bsky.social · 31/01/2026
I don’t disagree! Given a directional H, the two-tailed test feels exploratory. Also agree that effect sizes and CIs should allay all doubts. Still, I think it’s fair to raise eyebrows. Dropping a tail off the test post-hoc is a very easy way to make p-value go brrr
