it's a lot easier to measure lead in the body!

Two interesting things I've learned through collaborating with air quality scientists: 1. Measuring exposure to air pollution is really hard. 2. A lot of the harmful effects of air happen due to indoor air - a lot harder to measure than ambient air pollution.

the reason “AI will create so much abundance we will have a utopian society” rhetoric falls so flat is that the people building it will never, ever share their bounty unless it is taken from them and we all know it

the irony being, of course, that you can only read the slip of paper once you find your car.

ha, that happened in Philly when my car was towed for being on a parade route. they just relocate it, and then they leave a slip of paper on your windshield saying, "We have relocated your car to [new location]."

This is wild - somebody did a deep dive into the real stories behind this famous XKCD: sheets.works/data-viz/hol...
an XKCD comic showing a precariously assembled tower of blocks. much is labelled "all modern digital infrastructure." a thin leg down at the bottom is labelled "A project some random person in Nebraska has been thanklessly maintaining since 2003."

and said, "All you did was blow leaves off of their property and onto mine! Well, you can clean it up. And HERE - you can use a BROOM." And she came in so hot that the worker meekly accepted the broom, looked at the foreman, who shrugged, like, better do what she says .

My Nana once watched a neighbor's landscaping crew at work, with one guy just leafblowing all of the leaves off the neighbor's hard, through the fence, and into her driveway. She watched, and waited until they were done, and then she stormed out -

The Association for Human Mathematics (AHM) statement on OpenAI’s October 6 release of mathematical documents just dropped! www.ahmath.org/statements
AHM Statement on OpenAI’s October 6 Release of Mathematical Documents

Yesterday, on October 6th, 2026, OpenAI – which is currently defending lawsuits against accusations of illegal plagiarism, copyright infringement, and trademark dilution – released a repository of manuscripts purporting to contain solutions to a number of high-profile problems in mathematics.

Mathematicians did not ask for this work to be done. The Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, from whom OpenAI has claimed to derive its legitimacy, opened their initial advisory statement by saying that frontier AI corporations should not test advanced mathematical problems on internal models. In ignoring the central premise of the Advisory Group’s position, OpenAI has indicated total disregard for the norms of scientific research — norms that guarantee that mathematics remains trustworthy, ethically researched, and in the public interest.

Mathematicians have a particular vision of progress that is informed by history and field-specific considerations. We reject OpenAI's assertion that this release advances our subject, and we urge mathematicians and the public to view the value of this publication model with due skepticism.

Releasing over 700 files at once is not a demonstration of scholarship, but a demonstration of power. We urge mathematicians to discontinue their work with OpenAI and to return to a vision of science that centers human understanding.

It was dramatic, but also really ordinary. It's a big city but people don't get lost in the anonymity of it. New Yorkers love being helpful, they love sharing advice and opinion and utility.

The conductor comes and is attentive, quick, competent. "There will be EMS at the next stop - we'll wait there." We get there, the train stops, there's an announcement, nobody complains about the delay.

matty @mattio.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
"Can somebody go alert the conductor?" At the next stop several people go off to the conductor. "Here, I have a bottle of water." The woman who fainted looks ok, but says, "I just feel so strange suddenly" because she slumps again, twitching, unconscious for a few moments.

I get up. People make room. Somebody identifies themself as a doctor. They help the person to her feet, slowly, and get her into a seat. The train is very crowded, but both the doc and the person have all the room they need.

Anyway: woman, standing on the subway, appears to fall asleep, and then slowly slumps to the ground. I take my headphones out. Immediately one person is calling "Do we have a doctor or a nurse here?"

I've gotten really sensitive to the whole "oh nobody cares about each other in The Big Bad City" narrative, because it's wrong, it's nuanced, and it's also part of a false narrative about how big cities are More Dangerous than other places.

On the subway this morning, right in front of me, a woman collapsed. I'm not sure if she fainted or had a seizure. What happened was one of those moments of New Yorkers helping New Yorkers that I wish more people from not here knew about.

The ICE agent who shot a man in Minneapolis, left the state, was given refuge in Texas by Gov Abbott, and eventually got criminally charged by the feds... is now at a Hennepin County jail over state charges.

this coterie of top shelf idiots argued about what to do. as the bickering reached a crescendo, the driver said something that has stuck with me ever since: "Trust me, bro. I got us this far, didn't I?"

matty @mattio.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
this was the start but not the end of their problems. after some bickering they continued forward (CRUNCH) until their front wheels were at the bottom of the staircase. but CRUNCH, the undercarriage had bottomed out against the stairs... and the rear wheels were still at the top.

it should be clear that this was not a good idea. i watched as they crept down, one step at a time, arguing the whole way. but then the stairway narrowed, and they started scraping the front headlight against the adjacent building.

the whole "AI slowdown" thing reminds me of something that I saw outside of a party in college. i was smoking a cigarette and watching a group of drunk fratboys try to slowly drive an SUV down a flight of stairs and into a courtyard.

I would imagine that the more established an org's processes are, the harder it might be to have one foot on each horse. Whereas being somewhere more flexible (small org, or government?) might give you the ability to carve out that dual role. fwiw.

A chart showing change in emergency response time, by distance to congestion zone boundary.

Locations outside the congestion pricing zone show mostly no change.

Locations within the congestion pricing zone show a drop of around 60 seconds after congestion pricing - with greater drops further inside the zone.
