Croatia might have to start putting their faith in youth. Suker and Boban have barely had a touch, Prosinecki's throwing up on the halfway line.

I did it on a team building day in the bleedin' 90s and ended up with a huge bruise on my spine. Even then there was nothing officially competitive about it. These days I'd just refuse, but I check myself and know that's the advantage of being a middle-aged middle-management white guy.

Find all this absolutely astonishing. Don't know the OP, but I work for a big company with good policies and that wooden spoon business would not fly for one second. It'd go up the chain or to HR at the very least. It's obvious bullying. And I say this as someone with a sense of humour, honest.

Anyone got any nutritious, easy recipe suggestions for a cuisinally inexperienced 18-year-old who's been at university for a couple of weeks but appears to have been too embarrassed to cook in front of her flatmates?

My parents had a few. I was given No Highway and A Town Like Alice to read at school when I was 13 and loved them both – No Highway a kind of quiet thriller? – so bought On The Beach for myself and, um, never read it. Also have a hardback of So Disdained here, provenance unknown.

They couldn't make the one about Deee-Lite stick. City insisted Groove Is In The Heart should've been No.1 instead of The Steve Miller Band's The Joker, while the Premier League said The Joker had jumped more chart places and met the tie conditions. The independent panel found it inconclusive.

Yes, it's 30% off all 33 1/3 titles in the #BackToSchool sale until 4 Oct. An unmissable opportunity to build up a collection of Faiths to rival mine. @3313books.bsky.social www.bloomsbury.com/uk/series/33...

Not really! I'm actually going to Princes Park to watch Dartford play Whitehawk in the Isthmian Premier League, which is coincidentally where City will end up next season.

Think I'll watch this tonight, misty-eyed, reflecting on the fairytale magic of their 'meteoric' rise.
A Sky Sports documentary called Drink It In: The Rise of Man City (2022). The blurb goes: Manchester City's rise has been nothing short of meteoric; from an 8-1 humbling in 2008, to five-time Premier League winners. Follow the record breaking journey of the noisy neighbours.

Arguably the greatest UK top 70 single based on a gospel-infused jazz funk record by avant garde saxophonist Archie Shepp which was inspired by a prison riot in upstate New York which resulted in 43 deaths including 10 correctional officers, 9 of whom were killed by their own colleagues

Same. Then I can loudly dislike it with integrity. (Quite like the song in this case though, without feeling the need to actively play it. I leave that to the pervasive reach of the airwaves/fibre).

Very gingerly dipping a toe into the stagnant pond of The Discourse I think it’s obviously fine to not hear popular songs but my reaction to learning “a song I don’t know has broken loads of popularity records“ is “oh I should hear it, maybe I’ll like it”, why would it not be that?

I find it strange that some people refuse to believe this is the way our decentralised culture works now, that it's possible to be completely ignorant of hugely popular things that don't match your tastes and interests. People aren't lying about that because they think it makes them look cool.

If you're googling something you've heard of it, or you wouldn't be googling it because you wouldn't be aware of the juxtaposition of words to type. So, at the point of declaration, you can't be blamed for not having heard of it as you haven't had a chance to google it yet (Aristotle, 331 BC).

Bit jealous of that. Bring On The Night's a cracker, but I came to it late because a double cassette was too expensive for me in 1986. Always had ...Nothing Like The Sun and love big emotional songs like All This Time, When We Dance, If I Ever Lose My Faith, but you probs know all those already.
