"new math" number sense stuff actually *is* the fundamentals and I'm glad we will continue to teach it The number of people who think "mental math" is doing the standard algorithm in your head is insane and I'm glad we're nuking that methodology.

Man, I so want to believe this, but seeing even blue state senators saying we need to come together and let bygones be bygones is driving me insane.

51/47 feels right to me and seems in line with the other two Maine polls representing the tail ends

I honestly have an easier time believing we win Florida and Texas than believing there's anything short of death that will break the MAGA hold on the Republican party.

Meaning the idea is ludicrous. Texas's conservative approach to education is to essentially murder public schools so they can find private Christian ones. Anyway I'm bored of this conservation, so muting now. Good luck to your little ones with their long division drills!

"it possible you're getting a better result *because* the state has been more conservative in its approach?" lol

I certainly won't deny I'm fortunate to have good teachers, but I wouldn't want to replace the number sense instruction with pages of multiplication drills.

K. My kids are getting a great math education in their public school, no tutor needed, even in the hellscape that is Texas. Plenty of "lol new math" and plenty of memorizing times tables too.

Memorization is good for some things (and is still done! Times tables are still a thing) and actively detrimental for others. There are people who do the Standard Algorithm in their head. That's insane, but they were taught that's how multiplication is done and have zero number sense.

So your assertion is "the old way works for some people and fails many, many others and that's the way it should work." Is that right?

C'mon, man. It is really, really weird to claim that math education in the past was pure perfection given how many people say "I hate math, I don't understand the point of it." Everything in the right column is in fact very good. Teaching algorithms along with the reason they work is great.

It’s very simple and it’s been said over and over but I guess it needs saying continuously: if you deem one group too small to have equal rights you are enabling fascism, not fighting it. The people saying Dems are GREAT on trans rights are not paying attention and/or saying stuff like this.
Nichole Hiltz
The Democrats defend the Kennedy Center but not trans people.
A building.

@treewarrior.bsky....
maybe because defending everything about a super small minority of the population is not worth losing to fascists

This sucks, man. I get that especially for marginalized people it can feel like saying this stuff online is low stakes compared to the real-world harm trans people face. But we shouldn't want our social networks to be like this. It should be fairly easy to call this unacceptable

Talarico said he would vote to make affirming care for trans children illegal. He has essentially cosigned everything Paxton has done against trans children in Texas. Of course Paxton would be worse as a senator. Obviously. But you don't get to stab a community and not expect them to be upset.

I'm less sure after seeing the video. It's literally just a painfully cringe introduction for McCormick who isn't even up for relection. Also I think there's a good chance Fetterman is too lazy to go through a party swap

Matthew Borgard @matthewborgard.com · 10/09/2026
That was ... not as bad as I was expecting. It was literally just an introduction video for Dave McCormick and that dude is not even up for re-election. Fetterman sounds very ill here.

Having a senate majority means you control all the committees. You control what legislation comes to the floor. Plenty of other things. It is very, very important to have a majority even if it's not a highly functional one.

Perhaps! You could make the case that not knowing how to use an abacus doesn't represent a loss of intelligence. But it's actual data we have and not just vibe, which the Bruenig "piece" doesn't really bring up at all.

The first point is at least falsifiable and the limited research we have so far suggests that people do pretty rapidly lose mental skills (if not intelligence, however that is defined) when they rely on LLMs.

This is not really a defense but this has been a problem since the beginning of Gmail, not really a new AI thing. For whatever reason, if they can't use the original semantic web /pagerank search they made their money on, their search algorithms in their tools are absolute dogshit.

Interesting piece!I have attempted this paradigm a few times since Karpathy dropped it (for software development work) and never found it useful. It's way too sloppy to be readable for a human, and while my agent could query it, it wasn't significantly more efficient than giving it search/grep imo
