Orly's Draw-A-Story is a beautifully-animated & voiced kids CD-ROM title from 1997, made by Greg Johnson & Mark Voorsanger who did ToeJam & Earl. I made a patch so it works on Windows again. Try it on your kids! Let me know if anything breaks, I'll try to keep it working: github.com/matthewbloch...

[from the bottom of a very stupid rabbit hole....] I think it's possible to do these interfaces well!
A cartoon of a Jamaican girl on an idyllic beach, pointing to a treasure chest full of books with the word "Save" with one hand, and a rotten pile of fish skeletons in an oil drum with the other. There is a shack behind her, facing the beach with the word "Fish" on it.

Took a day off to organise the house, so naturally I'm now 2hrs into resurrecting 1997 edutainment title Orly's Draw-A-Story for modern Windows 🙃

I can't really share the poster I'm talking about but all the wonky details I mention are accurate.
Hello Mr [redacted]! Didn't want to send this as a public comment but I was really sad to see an AI-generated banner for British Science Week!

I think that normalising AI output and displaying it in the school is bad. It will dampen kids' creativity and their enthusiasm for human achievement. What do they think of time spent learning to draw (or write!) when they see their role models use AI? Who cares if the solar system has 7 planets, a car has a sideways wheel, or the microscope is also a lamp? Children notice these things!

British Scienece Week gives away plenty of carefully-designed material that we could use for a banner. They even run an annual poster competition.

Anyhow, thank you for organising it but I just wanted to give you a critical voice before AI leaks into the classroom. I think it dulls everyone's instincts and thought processes, and there's always an alternative, even if it's clip-art or stock photos, which I'd much rather see.

All the best - Matthew

Makes The Day Today's graphics look pretty sober
Chris Morris standing in front of a nonsense graph with "Scale", "Man", "Drugs" and "Dead Children" in geometric shapes.A graphic looking like something off BBC News from the 90s, with the title "Currency Susan", with pictures of 3 differently-dressed women standing in front of UK, Japanese & German national flags.
Another BBC news graphic entitled "Finance Arse" with the caption "But increased trading formed a unified arse at around lunchtime", illustrated with two globes close together looking like a bum
A news graphic showing a British policeman pointing a spray can at a cutaway diagram of a dog, with the dog apparently full of metal. The caption reads "The inside of the dog is destroyed but the outside stays the same shape". The outside of the dog is labelled "Resin".

Game idea for the Crystal Maze, if ever I heard one (from this excellent article on space toilets) mceglowski.substack.com/p/lets-talk-...
The Skylab toilet was a hit with the astronauts and helped inform the design of the next chapter in orbital elimination, the Space Shuttle toilet.

One piece of feedback from Skylab was that the toilet needed stronger airflow. This meant the Shuttle toilet opening had to be narrow. To practice correctly positioning their body, astronauts on Earth sat on a special training mockup with a camera mounted in the center of the waste tube. A successful docking with the device meant precisely centering one’s nether eye in the crosshairs of a video screen while crewmates looked on and yelled their encouragement.

Ohhhhh nooooooo my 6yo's primary school is advertising British Science Week activities with a slop poster. It's going to take all evening to pitch a firm response that doesn't make me sound insane 😬 but I genuinely think it's damaging to kids creative instincts to normalise this stuff around school.
AI slop poster for Science Week 2026, featuring a fucked up car, a fucked up solar system and a robot with an orange for a hand. Also the weird prompt "curiosity: what's your question?" at the bottom.
