I’m the guy in the fantasy football league who doesn’t really watch football, doesn’t keep up with the news, and just plays by the numbers. Sometimes it works out great, I took first of ten twice in a row! On the other hand

Trump Officials Propose Sale of ‘Woke’ Painting by Kehinde Wiley
The State Department recently removed the painting of Dominicans from a U.S. embassy, noting it was by the artist who made Barack Obama’s presidential portrait.

Shout out to the kid who yelled to me while I kayaked under this bridge to stick my paddle down in the water so he could see how deep it was and then called me a liar when I only stuck the paddle in two thirds of the way (he was right I was lying)

I was just thinking this morning about all the Steve Jobs emulation in tech which is obviously misguided in a number of ways, but not least because people focus so much on the fact that he was a dick to his employees or that he wore the same clothes every day and not on this:

I don’t know who needs to hear this but when your kid is playing with her squishy dog toy in the car seat and it explodes and she covers herself and the seat in a mysterious white cornstarchy substance and you have to immediately wash her off and wash her clothes and take apart the car seat (1/2)

Look AI and self-driving cars are great and all, but on days like this I seriously wake up and am struck by the technological miracle that I can live in a house that stays a comfortable temperature all year round

Companies break promises all the time. A self-guaranteeing promise does not require you to trust anyone. Full essay: stephango.com/self-guarantee
Companies break promises all the time. A self-guaranteeing promise does not require you to trust anyone. You can verify a self-guaranteeing promise yourself.

File over app is a self-guaranteeing promise. If files are in your control, in an open format, you can use those files in another app at any time. Not an export. The exact same files. It’s good practice to test this with any self-proclaimed file-over-app app you use.

Terms and policies are not self-guaranteeing. A company may promise the privacy of your data, but those policies can change at any time. Changes can retroactively affect data you have spent years putting into the tool. Examples: Google, Zoom, Dropbox, Tumblr, Slack, Adobe, Figma.

A self-guaranteeing promise about privacy gives you proof that the tool cannot access your data in the first place.Encoding values into a governance structure is not self-guaranteeing. Given enough motivation, the corporate structure can be reversed. The structure is not in your hands. Example: OpenAI.

Open source alone is not self-guaranteeing. Even open source apps can rely on data that is stuck in databases or in proprietary formats that are difficult to switch away from. Open source is not a reliable safeguard against the biases of venture capital. Examples: Omnivore, Skiff.

When you choose to use a tool, the future of that tool is always ambiguous. On a long enough timeline the substrate changes. Your needs change, the underlying operating system changes, the company goes out of business or gets acquired, better options come along.

It is possible to accept the ambiguousness of a tool’s future if you choose tools that make self-guaranteeing promises.

My favorite new hobby is buying things for $40 on Facebook Marketplace. Somehow everyone seems to have agreed on that price for large used items. Backyard grill? $40. Basement freezer? $40. The best part is that if you decide you're done with something you bought, you can just sell it again for $40.

When I first saw this I thought “well that’s just bookmarks, it should be a first-class feature”, but what’s cool about this is that feeds allow motivated users to just bootstrap whatever features they want. Very clever!

While I like the starter packs, I feel like the sudden influx of Bluesky user has destroyed the art of finding mutuals in bespoke ways, like posting “Boof Bonser” in someone’s mentions at 2:30am.

Dear 90s bands: instead of touring endlessly playing songs written for teenagers to middle-aged audiences, more of you should be following Chris Ballew’s lead, who pivoted to kids music and is still writing songs that slap just as hard as the Presidents top hits did open.spotify.com/track/5IcFRK...
